this one appears real. http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/02/20060216005401.shtml

However, this isn't really news to any of us, as we've always known it's not difficult to write a malicious program even for OS X, but the laughable thing here is that to run this virus, you have to authenticate and give your user and system password to allow the vius to run.

It appears to be classified as a trojan form reports I've read.
It was bound to happen, mac users need to practice safe computing just like eveyone else.

you have to laugh at the articles. "shellshocked"? We've known all along that viruses are possible on OS X. In fact they proved it several times. Yet, the funniest part, is the part where it says
"if they get an instant message containing the worm, they will have to extract the executable from the archive and then run it using administrator privileges. When run, they will see the message "Welcome to Darwin!""

I think Sophos is licking their chops for more market share.

It's only as outlandiash as some of the laxity I'd need to exhibit to be bothered by most of the stuff you wave under my nose as being harmful to Win-boxes.

moral of the story, don't give an unknown executable,, administrator rights by typing in your password when it asks for access...

Would running a VMware version on a 16 system Beowulf cell suffer from this as well?
