From the sounds of it I think these guy all had their bombs designed poorly and none of them went off. The guy in the hospital is supposedly one of the would be bombers.

Actually I just finished reading a book Dying to Win in which the author has stuided suicide bombers going back to the early 1980s. He said in something like 50% of the cases the motivation of suicide bombers was not religious but secular (i.e. they wanted to get foregin troops of of the country). As not something like 40% of them weren't too religious but saw being a suicide bomber as a means to an end and the only way they could achieve their goal. In other words, they were acts of desperation not mytardom. However, there are many that obviously do it for that reason.
