View Full Version : How do I force camera or card to use "new" file names?

I bought a 2nd memory card, now the file names are the same as the first photos taken when I got the camera. Can I program the camera to use a different series of file names? It's a Panasonic LC40 Lumix. I haven't found any reference to this in the manual. I thought the camera, not the SD card assigned the file names. (When I formatted the (old) card the numbers carried on where they left off; they didn't reset to #1!)

This is getting confusing!

I'm on my third digital camera and they all use continous numbering of the files so you don't have to worry about overwriting any files when copying them.

Ok I was looking ta the manual of the LC40S. Found the option that you can have the file numbers reset. So that option is probably set to YES. I think it should be NO. Unless I'm interpreting this the wrong way.

Attached two pics from the manual.

you could just put them in a different folder.
I rename most of my pictures makes it easy to find them.

My Digital Canon Rebel defaults to continuous numbering, but there is an option to restart numbering at 00001 each time the CF card is changed (the feature is called Auto reset). For most users, continuous is preferred, but some shooters like to start a new project at 00001 (a trip, or a special event).

Hope this helps!

Thanks to all, I think I have to stop being lazy and trying to let the camera's numbering system do all the work. I'm gonna start renaming, at least I'll try.
I just can't figure out how to rename 1000's of photos of 2 grandchildren with nothing to stand out about the date. I just take photos continuously when the kids are around. It's not just on special occasions, everytime I'm around them is special. I know ... all together now....AAAhhhhhh!

There are programs that can rename files automatically. For example, if you have a series of files of Cindy that are labelled IMG0004 to IMG0110 say, you can relabel them very quickly to Cindy 0001 to Cindy 0106.
