[Geek mode]This is very exciting. [/Geek mode]
Well, first of all i'm mostly an Intel fan but these benchmarks mean nothing. They are comparing current generation AMD chips to next generation Intel chips so of course the Intel chips are going to be a little faster. Also, there's not much of a performance improvement and knowing Intel the chips will come at ~$1000 each.

I think the most exciting part is the fact that Intel finally came out with something that outperforms AMD by a large margin.
Sure AMD is coming out with a new socket, and unless they have an ace up their sleeves the performance benifits by just moving to DDR2 won't be substantial --atleast for now.
I'm just glad Intel is back in the game so that AMD can come back down from the heavens and push out something better.

AMD seems to be beat when June comes and Conroe is reached. DDR2 isn't gonna do much for AMD as more bandwidth doesn't give current generation AMD processors any noticable performance increases.
This might be of interest to some. Anand reports seeing reduced performance with the new AM2 socket for AMD compared to Socket 939.

I don't care which company makes the fastest processor - the majority of people purchase low end to mid-range systems, and your average computer user doesn't even come close to taking advantage of what's available.

With that logic we might aswell be using 486 processors.
Not quite. ;)
For what most of us do today, an a64 3000+ or P4 3Ghz is more than sufficient, and the price is right.

You have to see the bigger picture; If it were just Intel (or AMD), and they dominated the market, they would do much like Microsoft. Imagine intel or AMD releasing the ONLY processor on the market. A slow, power gobbling expensive CPU. We need this competition between the two companies, so in my eyes they are equal.
They need to change the name... lol conroe Whaaaaa

I'd love to see Intel make a huge performance jump... then AMD would have to do the same to play with the big boys. Consumer wins. :)

That's the beauty of competition.
This is why I would love to see linux support games, the same way windows does. Microsoft dosen't know how to deal with the linux community, because they aren't a company that they can sue!

Keep in mind, that a lot of companies have fallen by the wayside, because of competition. From what I have seen, the real costs of using Linux in business, are around the same or more than using MS products, so I don't think we will be having any tag days for MS anytime soon.

Is there anybody else who's thinking of upgrading from their old beater computer to Intel Conroe? I was originally thinking of going AM2 w/DDRII but I want to sign a deal with the devil for a change.

I won't be upgrading until my current rig no longer plays the new games... then I see what is the best at that time. The CPU race is usually one of leap-frog so by the time I'm ready for an upgrade AMD might be back on top again. :)
I've given up on the latest and greatest....suckers game! I am going to stick with my Power Mac until it doesn't do what I need it to do anymore then upgrade. For now it is just fine!

I'll go for the Quad core when it's in the sub $300 range... so it'll be awhile yet ;)
