Allo allo
my coworker gave me her PC to work on,
seems her login has disapeared for windows XP pro, now i know ctrl alt dete etc, will get u to an admin screen...that doesnt work, becuase it appears admin is also gone.

i tried safe modes of different variety no dice.

so i resorted to a windows repair, agian no dice
tried an install over. no dice.

so finally i decided to go install a fresh copy on the secondary slave drive.
alas, windows runs login with logins and all the trimming.

i ran a virus check, nothing. i remember a friend having such problems from a worm u get from windows registration hack on old windows versions wihtout security. so i assumed that. but hey cant detect it.

so now i have windows running off D, im backing up the C work files to D and then im gonna format C entirely and fully with chk disk and all, and ill install a fresh windows, and then kablamo. its over.

so, how much should i charge for such an action, and has anyone ever encountered the no login error, many problems no solutions on yahoo searches.

isnt tech support for that stuff usually 100$ or something at liek futureshop or w/e.

its taken quite a few hours to deal with it, 3-8pm and itll take atleast another 5 for the C format install... so charity doesnt seem in my cards. cuz im a busy guy. and this isnt a 2 hour job.

any comments suggestions etc are appreciated. thanks in advance

5 hours to format and reinstall XP????? More like 2 hours to do it. Same time you are working on other machines....for you to format and reinstall Windows...no more than a brown bill

how about installing tweak ui and selecting "show (insert user here) on welcome screen".

A format and reinstall as mander said $100 tops, just a thought you should set your fees before you start any work

also I'd check the registry

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] / Value Name: LogonType
Value Data: [0 - Classic Mode / 1 - Welcome Screen]
Modify/Create the Value Name [LogonType] according to the Value Data listed above.
Exit Registry and Reboot

You want the value to be 1 for the welcome screen

format not 5 hours sorry, that was including downloading sp2, setup restarts, installing all their software... and toruble shooting.

takes me about 2 hours for my PC, but thats cuz i know my configs, and my drivers

they didnt give me all there driver cds, but no biggy can DL the stuff.

mostly the toruble shooting is taking all the time

im currently formmating the C:/ with check disk and full format + clean windows install, then ill wipe the D:/ clean.

i should have set the fee before hand ur right, but its a coworker anythign reasonable i assume is ok. but it was sorta dependant on the problem... if it was a simple install i woulda charged nothing. but its a whole trouble shooting procress and has become a windows repair, windows install, format, windows install, and another format.

i was thinking 50$

but what would a "pro" charge? like future shop, i wont charge that, just curious, ill cut her like 50-75% off or w/e

With the compitition out the the average price for a format and reinstall od drivers and software ranges from $45 to $100

EDit it doesn't matter if it takes you 2 or 10 hours its ususally a flat rate service fee

From what I've seen, it's $60 to $65 for OS install... $20 extra for programs

Backing up exsisting data would be extra... depending on just how much there is.

Unless you agreed on a fee for your co-worker to pay, before you did this, and botched it, then you have no right charging a dime for a simple procedure. Nice fella you are.

Just a quick question did you go to control panel then click on user accounts? Maybe you can check there?
