Any suggestions for relieving loose stools which our little doggy is suffering from now? She just started this weekend and it seems not to be showing signs of abating even though we've stopped feeding her for 24 hours in hopes of letting her system clear itself out.
Has anyone used a bit of "Exract of wild Strawberry" on a dog?
I'm afraid that this may be rather final as she is 16 1/2 years old and started getting frail earlier this spring. Seems like she's been dropping weight since the last visit to the vet in April.
We are rather concerned that once she's at the Vet's this time, it may be a visit from which she may not return :(

I'm not sure about dogs, but that's exactly what was happening my previous cat towards the end. He wasn't eating at all, became extremely lethargic and his stools were completely 'soft' and discolored. The cat was 17 years old and died of digestive failure while in the vet's care :(

Just a thought, Rusty...if she is still eating and drinking fine, try a little plain unsweetened yougurt or cottage cheese on her food. I have used this successfully with our dogs when they get loose. It help to bind them and put good bacteria back in their system. Cheese of any sort is a binder as is rice.
When Jiggs was in his elder years, have the same condition, we stopped food for a period of time then slowly introduced plain rice with chicken broth.
Lots of fluids to keep her hydrated.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear this Rusty... but I think you know the answer... the time is near http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/traurig/5.gif
All you really can do is talk to your vet and see if anything can be done...

Thanks I'll try that, she loves cheese so that's no problem getting it into her. We had a talk and with tears in the eyes agreed this time Muffy's time has come and it just may be her last visit to the vet on Monday :(
Signs of blood in the mess isn't good, but lets see what the day brings. :rrg:

So sorry, Rusty...I know too well how you're feeling. We made the decision to make an appointment with the vet for Jiggs...fortunately he passed in his sleep a few days before.

Yes Rice is good, you can also give your dog some Pepto about 1 teaspoon
Pepto-BismolŪ
For dogs only. Relieve vomiting or stomach gas, diarrhea.
1 tsp. per 20 Lbs.
Every 6 hours

Loose stools? Easy solution if this is a minor problem: Add a couple of tablespoons (for a 20 lb. dog) of pure pumpkin (tinned) to the dog's food. If the dog is biggger add more. It doesn't hurt to give a 50 lb. dog the full small can of pumpkin. This should fix the stool almost right away. If not, keep adding the pumpkin to the food. Note: If the stools don't firm up in a couple of days, get the dog to the vet as something may be going on. i.e. worms, parvo virus, reaction to dog food, reaction to flax seed oil, etc., etc.
Constipation? Use pure pumpkin for this as well. I call this my 'miracle' natural source and always have it on hand.
Extract of wild Strawberry - DON'T use this on a dog. Pepto is okay for a fast fix but, personally, I don't recommend using it. Kaopectate - used to be used by a lot of breeders until they changed the ingredients so I NEVER use this.
My dogs get a tablespoon of non-fat yoghurt in their food every meal.
Good luck with the old one.
