My neighbour has a new Acer laptop. He cannot turn it off. The off switch does not work. Unpugging the computer does not work because its on battery. Its really warm to the touch and has been on all night. Any suggestions?

Maybe pull out the battery? Call the manufacturer or return it to the store?

What happens when you got to shutdown in windows?
Did you try holding the power button for three seconds?

I have an acer 3003 and it is 'slow' to shut down, but eventually it does shut down.
Is your system on winXP?

There should be a little reset button on the bottom of the laptop... It will be the size for a penhead to push in..
Try that..
If, you still can not do it, then you can just let the battery power run out.. it will only last for 3hours top.

I let the battery run out. Then plugged it in and his computer works fine. He is new on a computer and he is 83 years old. But he is making progress. He can email and do web searches. (well sort of). It a complete foriegn thing for him. Never sat near a computer and its very intimidating for him.

Computers can be intimidating for sure especially for those of age..
I'm just glad that he is able to use his computer once more..
