spy/ad/mal-ware problem...

hi, i'm fighting my cousin's computer right now. i've cleared out all the visible traces of spy/ad/mal ware on his system. but i know somethiing is left on it and i can't get rid of it.

why do i know something's still on?
exhibit 1: the hosts file always seems to be reloading with the same set of unwanted sites and IPs - even after i delete the file for a new fresh one to be recreated.
exhibit 2: every installation of norton internet security does not work. i've tried both 2003 and 2004 versions. once i install it, i have problems updating it and i am not able to turn the firewall or the anti-virus functions on. in fact, the button that says "Turn On" actually doesn't exist anymore.

i've run CWShredder, Spybot, Adaware, hijackthis and CCleaner. what else can i try??

he's on a comp with windows XP home (SP1 i think), P4 2.0Ghz, 256mb ram, 60gb HD.

First there are alot of suspicious files I see.
It doesn't look like you done any online virus scans. Various online virus scans (http://www.thecomputermechanics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1098)
Download/install/update Ewido Security Suite. Do not run yet. http://www.ewido.net/en/?
Put HijackThis in it's own permanent folder (C:/HJT is an example). Do not run HJT from the desktop,MyDocuments, or any temp folder. The reason is backups are not saved properly in case they are needed later. Some of the files are coming up with little or no information, so we need a proper backup.
Reboot to safe mode.
Run HighjackThis and check these, then click the check fix button.

and i'm still running online antivirus scans

edit symantec's online antivirus scan says that c:\windows\system32\mapi32.exe is infected with w32.toxbot

there's just one problem. i can't find mapi32.exe and i do have "show hidden and system files" on.

i do have mapi32.dll and mapi.dll here.

W32.Toxbot Removal Tool

i just did a norton antivirus scan. the w32.toxbot was removed ok.

however, i'm still stuck with:
- two Trojan Horse files that have been successfully quarantined
- 180search adware that i just dled the symantec cleaner for
- and a bargainbuddy file which i think i manually deleted

just an update. i'll post again the moment i clear out the 180search

the symantec tool couldn't find the very thing antivirus found. claims that adware.180search and adware.ncase have not been found

one thing i hvae noticed is that many of these files are in the c:\documents and settings\LocalService\Local Settings\... folder. what's this LocalService folder and why can't i see it?

edit: nevermind. i found the folder and i deleted the file
