A recent study says that playing games is a workout.

According to a study done by Dr. Arlette Perry from the University of Miami, playing videogames can be a physical workout. Dr. Perry gathered together 21 boys between seven and 10 years old and had them play Tekken 3 competitively against each other. The study reports that as the boys played the game their heart rates went up as well as their blood pressure. The level of exertion was compared to brisk walking or cycling.

Don't cancel your gym membership just yet. While the competitive game playing apparently showed an increased rate of calorie burn, it reportedly did not effect glucose and lactate levels. Dr. Perry stresses in her report in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine that, "Videogame play... should not be considered a substitute for regular physical activities." Still, Dr. Perry says that "if (gaming)... is used to replace time spent watching television or simply resting, videogame play can serve to more positively affect energy expenditure."

So there you have it: Gaming is at least healthier for you than television and sitting around doing nothing.

why are people wasting all this time on these dumb video game studies?
No offense to blu for posting , im only disgusted with these studies that do nothing but waste time.

nothing has been gained from this study.
Gaming is not a workout, its a passtime, its not something that makes killers and rapists its a game.

Every week I participate in an online race. We race for an hour. By the end of the hour, my arms hurt, adrenaline is going, and I'm sweating. Good times :).

People come up with studies for everything and then take their "findings", correct or not, and show them to the world. Anytime people hear that a study was done they usually believe the results too. For example, that popular study you often hear about that says "95% of people who lose weight will gain it back within the first ___" (I forget how long it is) is from a single study in the 70s that had a small sample size and a lot of room for for error (I'm sure you could find a ton of instances of the "spurious correlation" or "third variable problem") that would make accurate generalizations impossible. It is, however, spammed across most weight loss diets and programs I see.

I don't have anything against studies, some are well done, interesting, accurate, and informative, (Milgram's Obedience Study comes to mind) just don't always believe what you see. They aren't all as perfect and bias free as they would like you to believe. It is possible that the people conducting the study have an agenda too.

Thanks for posting though Blu. :d

Edit: I'm not implying that this is NOT a valid study though.

My intention wasn't to say that THIS wasn't a valid study. My post was just sort of a response to Law's post and a general sort of post about studies since people have been disagreeing with the ones posted on the board.
