Cruel Act
Police in the east end are looking for the person who robbed a family of their beloved pets in an unfathomably cruel manner.
Litter mates Shannon and Sooner, two 12-year-old Dalmatians, died within days of each other after ingesting anti-freeze-laced meat that was fed to them on two separate occasions.
On April 5th Shannon started displaying symptoms. Dozens of tests later, she was diagnosed with anti-freeze poisoning but it was too late to save her. Ten days later, Sooner also started shutting down. He was immediately treated, but also died.
The deaths were devastating to dog owner and lover Mark O’Brien.
“It was the tragedy of losing the dogs and then the mystery of who did it,” he says.
“The first dog was gone. There still was another dog to keep me company and then the second one is gone. That's very empty.”
“It was hard to watch. They were in intensive care at the vet…until they died.”
It takes just a quarter cup of anti-freeze to kill an animal the size of the two dogs. In this case the veterinarian believes that meat the dogs ate was purposely saturated in anti-freeze by a sick individual.
How the poison was delivered is a complete mystery to O'Brien. His backyard's completely enclosed by a fence and his home sits at least 20 feet from the street.
“I feel invaded,” he adds. “I feel threatened. I really feel threatened now because my son plays in the same yard.”
Not only did they lose their pets; the family also paid nearly $10,000 in vet bills.
