I was chatting with a buddy about buying a new Mac. He said wait till the Intel machines hit the market...I'll have the best of both worlds.

What do you think?

Now?

Then?

i dont know :(
Apple using intel, Sun using AMD, Intel buying Alpha from HP..... all the cpu are merging or dying off, we need alternatives !!!!!

Now!

Never wait with technology, it'll all change tomorrow and you'll miss out altogether. :)

It may depend on the mac you plan on buying. My guess is the portables, and models like the mini may see intels sooner (like in a year) than say the powermacs.

The thing is, despite the sky is falling stuff, the powerPCs will still be supported for quite a while. My G5 which I bought a year ago, I plan on getting at least 2 years more out of it, and what I do needs to be fairly on top of tech.

My guess is the intels will take about a year to really settle in, so that's my 2 cents.

If you're just wanting a machine for general work, some either grab a mini, or pick up a used sawtooth in around the 4-500 MHz range, very very upgradable, and relatively cheap. I have one on another desk here, and it runs Tiger no sweat.

or just watch when I buy. If I do, wait about 2 or 3 weeks, and the next biggest thing is sure to come out.

Also another reason for buying now is that Apples Rev A models are famous for having oddball problems. We are talking a major change here. I would NOT buy any of the first intel Macs if I could avoid it.

Like Tim I will be sticking with my G5 for at least 2 more years.

**Tim how much RAM have you installed now?? Did I read that you are up to 8 Gig now?

no, I'm at 2 gigs, I'm going to go to 4 gigs soon. What a difference going from 1 to 2 gigs though. Holy.

But I will take my time going up to 8 (I will get there :D) as it will make this machine faster and faster. Perhaps at some point I'll drop a 512 meg video card in it (when they come out)

Should keep this thing fryin for at least another 2 years while the PCs will have long gone to the $50 pile.
