Windows Update Problem

I have installed Windows 98SE on a Compac Presario 1210 Laptop for my neice.
I have everything working just fine except when I go to Windows Update it says it's looking for available updates . . . . 0% complete. It just hangs there.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Make sure everything is unchecked here and try again :)

Hehe, I'm not going to quibble with your self-assessment. :)
Being an active Skyper may explain my inability to spell either jibe or jyve correctly, in whatever context.
