After much discussion (and some number throwing) I've decided to do a very unscientific poll. Why do people offer files to share with others?

Legality aside, you need another couple of options.

P2P is better known as file "sharing". You should have listed an option that just states "To share files".

Another option could be something like, "Been there, done that, no more"

Your options listed make it sound like a vendetta against the music and software industry. Don't know about you, but I don't work for nothing.

Marsher's comment on supporting the artists is right on. Unfortunately the artisits do not benefit as much financially as the distribution network does.

Many new artists welcome file sharing to get their music out to the public, but it is a double-edged sword.

As far as software goes ... and I am sure just about anyone reading this has now, or has previously, a piece of "pirated" software or software borrowed from a friend ... it is theft. The temptation is hard to resist, just like finding a couple of 20s laying on the ground. Unfortunately this digital age has brought a few challenges to an otherwise great advancement in society.

I agree that the artist get TOO small of a piece of the pie, but atleast it is something and the artist has some opportunity to make some money on the concert tour... now the writters are worse off as they get next to nothing if there are no sales....

Hi Bogie,
The poll is a result of a quesiton I asked in another forum (DVD, File sharing, etc.). The choices come from others that contributed to that forum. If I wanted I could have had 50 different choices. I wanted to keep it centered around the topics discussed in the forum.
On another note I agree that the artist gets very little and the companies are making the profit so I'm not out to get anyone - just asking. Thanks for your input.

Instead of people buying a CD, etc from the initials when they d/l something and like it, they should send $5 dollars directly to the band or artist.

That way the creative talent gets what it deserves.

The bloated distribution networks that sucks up all the money get what they deserve too.

Because most people who use p2p think it's free music/software, sad but true (someone i know actually said that).

But then on the other hand, some people want you to share your stuff:

One option is missing from the list:

- To download commercial-free TV shows in HighDef quality.

It's increasingly more and more popular.

Can also add, to watch TV shows from other countries that aren't shown here. Big example of this are all the people who watch anime.
