Suddenly for the last few days it takes a long time (about 40-45 seconds) to get on here. It makes no difference which browser I use. Other websites load normally. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, it comes and goes... most of the time it's fine, but you happen to click at just the right (wrong) time, it takes forever to load the page..
Status bar says: waiting for www.thecomputermechanics.com...
It's real fast right now though...

It's already 3 minutes slow since it was reset last time
I hope you're not going to wait til it's 30 minutes slow again :(

I can remove some server tools , like Who's online that can slow it downHow about cleaning out the shoutbox archive? It goes back to January 2006 and is of little value in the big scheme of things.
It's been fine for me all along, but debbie has a very good point.
The shoutbox archive is neither useful or necessary, if that can be done.

Yeah, pruning the shoutbox would have been a great idea if they hadda included the code :tch:
If we dump the table, ALL shouts go, we'd be starting fresh...

Isn't there any way to set the length of time the archive lasts... say 48 hours... or 7 days... or anything other than 'since the beginning'??
If the shoutbox needs to be cleared out totally to help improve performance, I say go for it... do it monthly if need be
It's no big deal... it's just the shoutbox... archiving past 48 hours is a waste of space..
Just my 2.5 cents ;)

Not sure where people are having a issue , speed has been instant for me all morning .. we are always cleaning ..
But I am not seeing any speed issues

The speed problem is when someone tries to edit a shout for spelling, content, etc.
Takes forever to load that page.

For me, I can click on a link and a thread opens usually right away... sometimes it's delayed by a few seconds (seems like forever) and the status bar says "waiting for www.thecomputermechanics.com..."
Sometimes, like if you go to the shoutbox archive, it takes 15 or more seconds for a page to load... every page...
Deb, it's in the code... sorta. You just type a command in the shoutbox and POOF... all gone (ALL gone though). It seems the creator kind of rushed the shoutbox. Lots of bugs here and there. :)
You could also setup a script in the "Scheduled Tasks" section to prune shouts automatically that are e.g. greater than a week old. You can also run a MySQL query manually to delete all shouts that are older than e.g. a week if you don't want to kill everything.
EDIT: It is probably best to do it this way (I deleted the old commands I had below. Tim still has them quoted in his post :d) since you're running from within vB. That way you know it will work. Time obtained from my script here (the number will be different depending on when you run it): http://b0rkage.com/timenow.php
Here's a sample query you could run in the query section of vB that would delete stuff older than a week:
DELETE FROM tableprefix_shout WHERE s_time < 1147884201);
tableprefix being the prefix, if you set one up during installation. Otherwise it's just shout...
DELETE FROM shout WHERE s_time < 1147884201);
1147884201 is the time approximately one week ago... you can go back to that page to get newer numbers.
Oh yeah... if that deletes more shouts than expected don't come back and kill me. (Should be fine but I don't have anything to test with) You have been warned :d

DELETE FROM tableprefix_shout WHERE s_time < (TIMENOW - (60 * 60 * 24 * 7));
Depending on how it will be parsed might also need to be like this (but I highly doubt it):
"DELETE FROM tableprefix_shout WHERE s_time <" . (TIMENOW - (60 * 60 * 24 * 7));
tableprefix being the prefix, if you set one up during installation. Otherwise it's just shout...
DELETE FROM shout WHERE s_time < (TIMENOW - (60 * 60 * 24 * 7));

sure hope you can't just type mySQL commands into shout, might want to plug that real fast, or keep the prefix a big secret.
Oh no you can't type that in to the shoutbox of course. Harmless to know. :d

good. I recall a while back someone knew some script to enter that did something or other that opened up editing. I have no idea how the shout operates behind the scenes.
I find the shout loads real slow. Pruning it right down if it helps shouldn't matter it's all jibber anyways no real use saving.

Agreed. my name might be among the top ten shouters but this isn't a competition to see who opens their yap the most. Shout count can be eliminated all together if you like. This way no one can complain as know one knows who has the most. Nuke the shouts and start fresh. Trimming the word association game in the water cooler might be anothe thing to look at. Do we really need to keep that many posts with just one word in them? Get out the broom and start sweeping. :d

I think it's simpler than that. I think a lot of the problem are the ads. With a good number of the users running pop-up blockers and IP blockers. Could the ad server be giving time-outs back to the board, slowing it down?
