whenever i try to run need for speed 4 high stakes it says win32 has encounterd an error

NFS4 HS Does not run well on P4 machines running XP. There are some patches available and info on this issue.. Try patch; NFSHSpatch4_50.exe

Is it DOS based? Alot of older DOS games don't run well or at all under WinXP.
