Hey all,
I am looking at purchasing the following camcorder:
http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=10290593&whse=BCCA&topnav=&ec=BCCA-EC780-CatHome&pos=13
I have a question about copying the video to my computer and editing and compressing for viewing on the internet. The main purpose for this camera is to record our weekly church services. It usually lasts about 45-60min and I need to compress them to real video format for viewing on the internet. Is this possible?
Thanks.

Dvd camcorders are mpeg2. Therefore they are already compressing the video.
Personally I would buy a mini dv camera.
Then you would have good quality footage that could be compressed.
mini dv tapes come in 66 minute lengths.
Look for a camera with an external mic input. On board camera mics usually suck.

Currently I use my Sony Digital camera to take video on my 1Gb memory stick (which is mpeg format) and then convert them to .rm format using Soundforge 8.0. Can I do this with the DVD camcorder? How many minutes can be recorded on the 1.4Gb dvd's?
Here is another one I found: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10071190&langid=EN&CMP=ILC-Clicks_From_Flyer_Pages#
Which would you prefer Sony or Panasonic?

Basically, I need to know the advantages and disadvantages of DVD camcorders. Can I edit the video? Can I convert the files? When they are burned to the DVD are the files called .mpg? or what are they?

I chose to go with tape for the longer record time. The Panasonic camera we have offers quite good sound capability with the built in mike. We have recorded live music performnces and the sound qulity is very good. I can't offer much on your other questions.

How do you put the video from MiniDV onto the computer? How long does it take for say 1hr video and how much space does it take on the hard drive?

Firewire is the way to go.
If you don't have it on your computer you can get a pci card for around 45$
Dv is about 13-14 gigs per hour.
It takes the same amount of time to capture the video as the video is long.
