Hi,

I am trying to understand why the 1 month old iPod nano does not want to turn off when pressing Pause/Play for several seconds as it supposed to. It was working before as supposed to and now just stopped. It rather turns off the screen a few seconds after I press on the button, but when I release it, the large battery sign appears with a 'charged' message. If any button is be pressed after that, iPod comes back to the ready state.. so it feels as it just goes to some standby mode and does not shut off. In other words, there is no long start up. It will stay like that until the battery is discharged.

. Resetting does not work.
. I've updated to the newest updater soft and restored the iPod to factory defaults, but no luck turning it off.
. I've read on Apple forums that there were some problems with HD based iPods after jogging. They refused to start or turn off and needed a reset or be put on base, but my case is a bit different.

Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure that is normal. Mine dosn't completley shut down to teh point of a long boot up unless it isn't touched for like 24 hours or something.

I don't have a nano howerver, but a 3rd gen ipod, but I don't think a lot has changed in that department.

If I leave it like that for a night, it's completely discharged by the morning and does not turn off until I recharge it for some time. I do not think this is normal because at least my friend iPod's screen can turn off and it can be started the day after.

Sounds like something is screwed up. My wife has a Nano and it shuts down completely just as you suggest it should, after which you just flick the "lock" button on the top to prevent an accidental start-up. When you want to use it you just reverse the order and all is good. Take it back and have the store rep have a look.

Did you Purchase an Apple Care Warranty with it. IF yes, Send it back to
Apple and they will give you a new one.

Have you tried restoring it to factory defaults.

I bought it from Canada Computers and they've said that they do not sell any warranties at the time I've bought it, if I am not mistaken. They've suggested contacting the manufacturer for that. That was a month and a half ago.

Even if I haven't bought any warranty, aren't I supposed to have a 1 year manufacturer's one? Do you think CC can replace it for me or should I contact Apple's vendor in TO directly? I'll call CC this week to find out.

Thanks

Have you tried restoring it to factory defaults.

I've tried resetting it by pressing both, menu and middle button for over 5-6 seconds. After that it restarts, but does not fix the turning off problem.

Also, I've wiped it out by hitting a restore button on the iPod PC software. My version is up to date, as it claims.

Thanks

Its funny you mention this. My Nano does the same thing. I also find that it lately is slow to respond when you want to navigate though the menu, or song lists. Also my hold feature, even when unlocked stays on hold. You need to tap the menu button to release it. I have taken it to the future shop where I bought it. It seems that it needs to be replaced. This is actually my second ipod, had to take the first one when back because the paint started pealing off. Seems for once the future shop warranty has done something for me. I just wish I could get my money back.

I took it to Apple store at Fairview mall and they've replaced it without any problems. There's a 6 months free replacement warranty from Apple by default and another 6 months, it has to be sent instead of being brought in person. There's a $40 fee for mailing service. If extended warranty is bought, then that fee is waived off.

I can't believe 1.5 months was enought for ipod to get screwed up. I think that investing money into their extended warranty ($70) might be worth now.

Cheers

In any case I would have bought either iPod or Creative's mp3 player (forgot the model name). I think Apple did a good job designing these devices. The same applies to Creative, but they lack a nice color display and the coolest circular control : )
