Disk Cleanup...
Double click "My Computer"... Right click on C: drive... select Properties. Then click the Disk Cleanup button. You will see a list of files that you can delete and the space that can be reclaimed for each item. (If you highlight them you will get a short explanation)... If you want to remove any simply check them off and then click "ok".. You will then be asked to confirm .. then it will delete the files... Do the same thing for each hard drive ....
Remove Windows Components......
Double click "My Computer"... Right click on C:... select Properties. Then click Disk Cleanup ... On the More Options Tab.... Click Clean Up "Windows components". You will then see a list of items you can uninstall... (Checked off components are the installed ones)... Follow the on-screen directions... If you want you can reinstall components later. (you will possibly need your CD for this)
Remove Applications....
If you are running low on space its a good idea to clean out any programs that you no longer use...
Double click "My Computer"... Right click on C:... select Properties. Then click the Disk Cleanup ....Select More Options Tab.... Click Clean Up under ''Installed programs' (this will take you to the Add/Remove programs) You can highlight the program you want to remove and then click the Add/Remove. WinXP gives you more information when you click each item... To remove a program click Change... then follow the directions.
Clean Restore Points...
In WinMe/XP the system stores settings you can use to "go back" if you have problems. If you happen to be one of those ppl who do a lot of installing and uninstall you will have many restore points on your system. To delete all but the most recent one... click Clean up under "System Restore" on the More Options Tab. If you want you can disable this feature...

IE is a pack rat.. You need to clean out unwanted Temporary Internet Files/History & Cookies... Open IE... select Tools ... Internet Options... on the General Tab "Delete Cookies" Delete Files" (make sure you check off "Delete off line content" Then clear History... If you delete Cookies on certain sites you visit you may have to sign in again be for you are recognized.
You can also delete any Windows Temp files... (this is part of the disk clean up and you do not need to repeat it)
Double click on "My Computer" Browse to C:\WINDOWS\Temp. It is safe to delete all files in this folder. It is a good idea to reboot before cleaning out this folder to make sure none of the files are in use. It is a better idea if you use save your downloaded files you remove them first
Decrease Browser Cache Size (Optional)
IE and other browsers save the web pages you have visited.. You can decrease the amount of disk space... Right click one the IE icon select Properties. On the General Tab... click on the Settings under "Temporary Internet files". You can use the slider or change the number manually... (You can also access this though IE... Open IE... Tools Internet Options...)
To make sure everything is gone... Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot... (if you are not sure about a file that you just deleted you can leave it in the Recycle Bin just to make sure everything is working before you delete it)
Now last but not least... Defrag each of your hard drives. Double click "My Computer"... Right Click on the drive and select Properties... On the Tools tab click Defragment Now.... You might want to do a Scan Disk prior to the Defrag...
Just a note remember to close all applications before doing Scan Disk or Defrag... You can do Ctrl Alt Delete and end task on everything except Systray and Explorer or you can boot into Safe Mode and do it from there. Remember to disable your screen saver.
