Im looking to buy a Car next summer and right now im just looking around doing my "homework" I guess you can say on whats good and so on.

Anyways im looking to spend in the range of $10,000 give or take car on the road etc.

I have been looking at maybe getting a Honda Civic SIR since i hear they are good cars plus it would come with power everything which I would like. Also since its an SIR version it will have a little more power then the SI. So im just wondering what everybody thinks about the car? Any problems I should look for and so on?

Also any suggestions on cars? I would like to stay away from Domestic cars as I dont like them to much.

Thanks

You can't go wrong with a used Honda or Toyota :)

Maybe MM will sell you his :d

The SiR is a nice car... can't knock it...

But along with it comes excessively high insurance rates

Blame high theft rate and street racers for that...

You might want to consider something a lil less attractive
A Sentra SE-R is a sedan, but is every bit as good of a car...
Much better insurance rates ;)

Good point.

Before signing on the dotted lines, get an insurance quote for the car you're looking at, and shop around. :)

Honda Civic SiR is rated a 5(1-5) as vehicle most likely stolen. Thats what my State Farm rep told me.
Your insurance rates won't be worth it. Believe me i'm in the same boat.
I've been looking into SiRs for a couple years, from the 6th gen(1998-2000) to the 7th gen(2002-2005).
Other vehicles to look at roughly in the same price range.
Nissan Sentra(a bit over your budget)
Nissan 240SX
Acura Integra, I don't know the model..I THINK GS will give you power everything and these are definitely in your price range.
plus a Cavalier Z24 sure it's domestic but they are sadly dirt cheap even for LOW KM.

anywho...thats it for me.

The Integra is also in the most stolen category as well ;).

A used Toyota Corolla might be better than a Honda in terms of the theft issue. Corollas might look boring but their top-notch reliability is legendary.

My baby is a '91 Accord EX 4-door, with 210,000km on the clock.

And 3 timing belts. Runs like a very fine watch. :d

Sickcars, if you really want to afford the insurance buy a car you don't want to be seen driving!
Slouching down behind the wheel to be inconspicuous is better than paying those high premiums for popular cars!

Hondas are great, but go to some other dealers as well. KIA and Hyundai have some nice rides for a low price and great warranties, if you want to drive and not worry about the repair costs that is the way to go!

New is a bit more than you stated but I think a brand new Accent for 16000 loaded is a better way to go than used.

Seriously at that age you should go for an older car. Older cars can be reliable as well. I had a 1991 Cavalier with which I paid $88 a month only for liability. I was 21 at that time. Again seriously think about a newer used car. You might be better off with something from the early 90s.

Does he want to show his standing in society, or does he want basic transportation???

The "price" varies wildly between these two extremes.

Kia i wont touch
The early Kias are junk, but the newer ones are supposedly better (from the reviews I've read), but time will tell if they pass the long-term reliability test. The jury's still out on that.

They're cheap though :)

Both Kia and Hyundai were Junk in the early days but in order to secure their place in the market they had to put out a better product and a great warranty to Get R Done!

Personally I wouldn't have considered any off shore vehicle just a few years ago, then I took the plunge with Hyundai and never regretted that.
If you want good cheap transportation then that is the way to go, if you want "Bling" then buy what ever is presently popular and be prepaired to buy the car over again in your Insurance premiums ... especially for the new drivers out there.

The problem is I dont want to buy a junk car. I currently drive one of my parents older cars which is junk and they are going to be replacing it soon. So when I buy mine next year I want something better etc.

I dont trust Kia...at least not yet and I dont really like anything from Hyundai.

Thanks for the help :)

You need to balance the cost of insurance vs. the anticipated cost of repairs too. What good is it to buy a car that's cheap, and cheap on insurance, only to later discover that those savings are going out the door to pay for constant repairs?

You can always checkout a 2 to 3 year old Neon, that fits your 10g budget and the insurance is reasonable ... my daughter got one and the insurance is reasonable. As for the neon itself, so far so good.

Repairs are going to be cheaper for me. Also the fact that tis a Honda SIR very good cars very reliable and so on I should not have any major problems. Also my cousin is a Mechanic so right there i Save also my friend is one to so Im safe there. Also before I buy it i would have both of them check it out to make sure it was in good shape of course.

p.s. Neons are Domestic and I dont like them :) lol

I noticed your age and location........unfortunately that's going to cost you big time when it comes to insurance for a car owed by you. The car you're currently driving, is it registered in your name or one of your parents? Get some online insurance quotes to prepare you for the worst.

Your best bet would be a Honda it is a good reliable car that holds it's value.

i'll go ahead and give you a heads up for an insurance quote.
look to pay upwards of 7000-9500 dollars annually.
if you insure it under your own name.

Edit - For a Honda Civic SiR

My parents have owned 3 or 4. So I have a reason to knock it.

Also quick question. We have 2 cars right now with me and my parents living in the house. They are each first driver on each car. Can say my dad become first driver on my car Also so I can be second driver? Or can you only be first driver on 1 car??

Thanks

3 cars. 3 separate first drivers. The third car would automatically go primary under your name. That's according to State Farm and what they told us if 3 cars existed in the house.

Same thing with my insurance, and I do have 3 cars licenced, each driver is primary on one vehicle.
Be aware that the insurance likes to place the newest driver on the newest car so they can max the fee with their expanation "This permits the new driver to drive and be insured on all 3!"

The only way to beat that is to register the 3rd in your name, 3 vehicle policy still applies to the household but you would be # 1 on your car!

Actually, just to add to that, they won't ASK you who drives what... YOU have to TELL them who is primary driver on each car.
That way you're in control of not being over charged ;)

Tried that, Dr. Dan, was told they do that so the kid is insured on the most expensive unit so that they will be accepted on the others as well.
The way I beat it is to place the 3rd in the kid's name and forced them to be primary on that car. The kid still is insured under her own vehicle when driving one of the others and is covered driving the other cars.
As for the rate, it didn't make much difference. Nor did it matter which company we insured with.

Yes, that's right Rusty... wasn't arguing that at all... just ADDING that you have to tell them that's how it is or they'll try to do it the other way anyway...

Sorry if we got the wires crossed, was trying to make sure that point was understood. Damn insurance companines anyhow! I hate to see it when a kid has to pay for his car over and over again for the first three years!

( neigbour kid, 1 accident minor in nature stupidly reported to insurance a $300.00 claim , vehicle cost $9000.00 aprox. to purchase a month before the incident. Premium went from $1970/year on his dad's policy to 4500! /yr.
After the 3 year punishment period, he bought the GD,car again from the insurance!

OMG, $300???

Throw money at the victim, and get them to sign a release.

This is a great lesson for the kids here.

I told him under $1000, in damage it need not be reported to the Police but he figured he's paying for insurance and so let them cover the damage to the rub strip on the bumper he hit.
Guess he got a real wake up call!

So that $300 claim actually cost him over $2500 per year for 3 years... $7500..
And even more after that... as I'm sure it didn't return to $2000 yr. after 3 years... maybe 6 years if he keeps himself clean...

Yup, he's just got his renewal, 3 star rating now, still 2700/yr!
Young drivers if they have a claim need an extra large container of Vaselene!

He's already paid 75% of the purchase price to the insurance and the costs still continues!

Good to know thats its up to $1000. Either way if I was in that kids position for $300 I would of just paid him and not claimed it.

Thansk for the info guys :)
