Bill slaps street racers
Fri, June 16, 2006
Penalties could range from a year in jail to life in prison if racers cause a death.
By JIM BROWN, CP
OTTAWA -- Street racers would face mandatory driving bans and, in cases where they kill someone, could spend life in prison under legislation introduced by the Conservative government.
"Street racing is not about kids having fun," Justice Minister Vic Toews said yesterday after tabling the bill.
"It's reckless, it's dangerous and too often it kills."

I support this 100%. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Saw last evening's news and they also impound the vehicles then as shown on CTV crush it with the Pay loader!
That would be the worst thing for the street racer to deal with after lovingly building his ride only to have it destroyed!
Maybe they should be made to watch as the car is crushed! ?

Insurance could be a problem with this solution. :)

To complement this, open more tracks for the enthusiasts.

Wouldn't work.
That type wants to rub the face of the general public in their insanity.
Like the idiots with the twin 12" woofers.

If caught, and the car is crushed I don't think the insurance companies will pay or at least they may put clauses in the policies to absolve them from responsibility for those that are impounded and destroyed. Leaving the owner to pay the whole bill!
I can't wait to see what happens when "Drifting" really catches on here!:tch:

Neighbour's kid has access to a track and does use it but usually ( from my own youth's experience ) races take place at a whim, two hot cars testing each other without thought of the consequences.....me too, guilty as charged!

Funny story about that.
A passenger was telling me about his 97-year-old grandfather, who had his licence taken away for racing.
Seems he had an older full-sized car, and used the cruise control much like the launch control on GP cars. There was no bottom cut-out on it.
From a light, he just hit resume, and whoosh.
He did it in front of a cop once, and that was all she wrote.

If I had a track next to my place. I'd be there 24/7 :rah:. I thoroughly enjoy track racing. But yes, even I'm guilty of doing stupid things on the street.
MM:
That's hilarious:hys:
F & F Tokyo Drift will bring all the idiots driving sideways on the street :tch:

Here is a new one (http://www.insidetoronto.ca/to/etobicoke/story/3556800p-4109603c.html?loc=etobicoke), I think.
Imagine two Corvettes crushed, IF these guys are convicted.
If they are leases, they will pay and pay and pay, and have no car.
Yeah.

Saw that on the news. That Vette that hit the guardrail was literally chopped in half.

The stupid thing in all this is that the '06 cannot be challenged by older Vettes.
Not even close.

It's the thrill of the chase MM. Winning is usually secondary with these morons.

About time - way overdue.
I was not a saint in my youth, but never street racing ... that's insanity. Want to kill yourself in a modified car, get injured, or just plain wreck it? Go to a track so everybody can watch you do it. At least if some spectator gets hurt or killed (and that has happened), they knew the risk when they went there.

He should have just snubbed his nose at them, and laughed a lot.
He would still be alive today.
