View Full Version : 850 mHz or 900 mHz with fido?

I'm going to be getting either the T630 or T637 from Sony Erricson. I was wondering which I should go for, my current considerations are as follows.

Most importantly better reception with either, since fido and rogers merged i should have access to the 850 mHz band, wouldn't it be better for me to have the 850 along with the 1900 on fido?

Travel abroad, I wown't be doing any, but I know that not too many places outside North America use the 850 band, they all use 900

The T630 comes in white, which looks 1000 times better then the black of the T637, but I could always get a faceplate

900MHz isn't a North American band....850MHz and 1900MHz are...

Before the Rogers integration, Fido was 1900MHz...now it can take advantage of both (if you set your phone to roam on the Rogers network)....if your in an area that hasn't been successfully integrated yet

In North America it's 850 mhz and 1900 mhz, if you're travelling outside of NA then you will probably need a world phone.

but becuase of the merger I get to use the 850 band of rogers, my main question is would I have any benefit from using 850 over 1900. I heard the 850 travels farther then the 1900, but since i'll be using it in the GTA this wown't really matter right?

850 gives you greater distance and unlike 1900 it will penetrate areas like elevators etc. You should use 850 whenever possible.

Not anymore, most of the Fido towers has been shutdown so Fido is now Rogers and everyone on Fido has access to 850 if you have a compatible phone.

Yes but Fido is not selling any phones with 850MHz that I am aware of. True, Fido users can use the rogers network however its not free for them, I believe there is a small monthly fee. Ideally, get a quadband phone or one that does 850/1900.

Not sure about non contract Fido users, but I am on a two year contract with Fido and I do get to roam on the Roger's network for free.

As for using my phone outside of NA I have a SE T616 from Fido and I had no issues when using the phone in Italy last year on various networks over there.

I recently got myself a Motorola V551M cell phone, it's also a Quad-Band World phone. I'm on Roger's Pay as you go plan. However, the plan does not enable me to use my phone when i'm in the U.S. or overseas.

They are selling some phones with 850, not all of them are. Also, Rogers is free in the areas where Fido serviced previously and on prepaid, Rogers access is free for a limited time with no extra charges.
