Good news for Oshawa :)

I hope for GM's sake that the Camaro is a strong seller.

Oshawa, Ontario — General Motors of Canada Limited President Arturo Elias has announced that the Oshawa, Ontario car plant has been selected to manufacture one of GM's most anticipated new vehicles, the Chevrolet Camaro.

Early production versions of the new Camaro are expected at the end of 2008, with sales starting in the first quarter of 2009.

The new product program and conversion of the Oshawa plant to a state of the art flexible manufacturing facility will begin immediately, representing a $740 million (Canadian) investment.

"This important new investment for Oshawa would not have been possible without the strong partnership with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) and federal, provincial and local governments" said Mr. Elias. "Oshawa's selection to build the new Camaro is a tribute to our employees' reputation for the industry's best quality and productivity, and further evidence of the exciting comeback happening at GM."

CAW president Buzz Hargrove said "Earning the mandate for the new Camaro is a huge accomplishment and is due in part to the reputation of our members for producing great quality vehicles. CAW local 222 has really stepped up with an innovative local agreement that contributed to building a viable business case for the Camaro."

Today's announcement is great news for all GM stakeholders in the Durham Region" said Federal Finance Minister the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa. "It builds on GM's broader integrated innovation investment that includes research partnerships with educational institutes across Quebec and Ontario, including the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT)."

"GM's investment in the Camaro program here in Oshawa proves once again that when government and industry work together, the result is a stronger economy and even more opportunity for Ontario families," said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. "Our province's strength continues to be our highly skilled workforce and our culture of innovation."

"Canada offers the essential elements for a vibrant auto industry: strategic location as a gateway to the North American market, and an ideal climate for continued investment. Today's announcement reflects that confidence in our country and our auto industry." added Colin Carrie, Member of Parliament for Oshawa and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry.

The CDN$740 million investment completes GM Canada's Beacon project announcement of March 2005, bringing GM Canada's total investment since March 2005 to more than $3 billion.

The new Camaro is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 icon, and GM has indicated the production version is going to look almost identical to the concept that was awarded "Best in Show" at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The car hinted at past Camaros (most notably the first generation) but appealed to modern sensibilities with a fuel-efficient powertrain, sophisticated chassis and contemporary design execution.

"Camaros offered performance that could rival expensive European GTs," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design at the Camaro Concept introduction. "Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new car buyers."

The Camaro Concept featured a 400-hp 6.0-litre aluminum version of Chevy's small-block V8 (mated to a 6-speed manual transmission) and a sophisticated chassis with four-wheel independent suspension (featuring progressive-rate springs and gas-pressurized dampers). The engine is fitted with fuel-saving features like GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation technology.

It is still too early to report on the production version's specifications, model designations and equipment levels.

Good news for the economy and GM... At least our friends in Oshawa can bolt 'em together properly.

Let's hope GM works on their engineering and component quality.

...oh, and I hope they tone down the style a bit. The concept car looks like it's right out of the movie, "RoboCop" ... or perhaps one of my kid's transformer toys.

If the price of gas ends up skyrocketing for some reason (as is probable given the current instability in the Middle East), this might end up being a rather expensive mistake. And after all... the 1st part of the baby boomers will be entering their 60's this year. Does GM really believe they'll still be buying muscle cars 10 years from now???

I'd guess yes. Disposable income and reliving the glory days.... I think it'll work. I had a '68 ragtop and a 67' hardtop and would love another pony car but I've sworn off GM until they get their act together.

I'd prefer one of these: http://www.superchevy.com/technical/paint_body/bodies_panels/0506sc_cars/

Very good points....

GM's thinking is that, since the Mustang and Charger are selling well, they can get in on the "muscle car" market and capitalize on it.

Gives me time to save for a decent downpayment on my first new car.

There were or possibly still are already Ebay auctions from dealers that you can buy the first ones that are coming out!

What? buy a preproduction car before it can be made properly at the best manufacturing facilty in North America. I'll pass.

I would never buy a car in its first year of production, especially with North American cars. I'm speaking from experience.

Wait at least 2 model years until most of the engineering bugs are dealt with.

No they were auctioning off the ones that are being built in 2009. The first real production cars that are available. Can't find the link anymore I found on another board.

If you read the entire release, it mentions the union oking 2500 buyouts to secure the new product. A buyout is the company buying jobs from the union. Those jobs will no longer exist.
Incidently, I went and had a look at the disply model, and the photos don't do it justice. It is a stunning looking car, absolutely gorgeous. The proprtions are excellent. It looks good from any angle.

But overall this announcement is SAVING jobs, otherwise 1/2 the plant would have possibly closed if they didnt give Oshawa anything else in 2yrs... + Most of these jobs that will still go away will be from attrition over the next 2-3 yrs...

I saw it in Detroit too, it does look real nice! it definetly had the biggest group of people gawking at it! Much nicer than the huge Challenger Dodge is coming out with...

The only fault I can see with the Camaro is not acting sooner to have had the concept out for the 2005 NAIAS and been able to start building sooner, but if that had of happened it would not have been built in Oshawa because we'd be stuck building thei MonteCarlo/Impala for another year and could not have made room to go RWD in Oshawa. Oshawa will be building some exciting cars on that Zeta platform!!!

Overall it is saving jobs, in the sense that the future looks better with this investment. The Camaro is only a small part of the equation, as it is not a mass market car, but rather what has become known as a "halo" car. Without product designated to the Oshawa plant 2, both plants would have been closed. Some of it is smoke and mirrors, in that the Beacon project would have resulted in 1 plant anyway. Plants 1 and 2 are under the same roof, and it would have been impossible to maintain the operation with half of the building vacant.
