View Full Version : Zone Alarm
I downloaded Zone Alarm, well & fine. except that now and then
a big block 6 x 6 appears on my desktop. I don't appreciate it's
appearance and wish to keep Zone Alarm but nOT the big block
of Zone Alarm's features that are not functionable. Anyone else
have this problem?
Cheers

Set it up right and you won't hardly ever see anything ;)
Set it block all incoming requests without notification; and when a program is requesting access to the net, if you know it's safe to let if do so, check the box that says something along the line of 'remember this choice' and click allow.
You won't see these pop ups for very long... before you now it you'll forget it's even there ;)

if thats the splash screen you should be able to turn that off within
the program.

I don't use Zone Alarm.
Possible that the newest version has some problems.
Has Zone Labs Lost It?
the release of version 6.0, isn't getting a warm welcome in the Zone Labs forums.

ZoneAlarm 5's release last year was so aweful that it permanently turned me away from the product. And version 6 isn't any better. Since ZoneLabs was bought out, the quality of their product went straight down the drain.

I'm still using ver. 4.5.594 with XP Home.
No problems.
My version is 3.7.143. and it works very well. I was going to download version 5 but chose not to after reading so many horror stories about it.

I dropped ZA a long time ago, and am using Sygate and really like it. It doesn't use a lot of resources , works and never gives me any hassles - my kind of program.

I started to use zone alarm at first but got sick and tired of the program so i went with sygate and i enjoy that more.
For a free program, Zone Alarm is good.

Sygate is free too and some ppl on this board feel it is better than Zone Alarm, me included. So if you don't like Zone Alarm you might want to give Sygate a try.

I didn't know that....thanks :). I'd like to try it. Do you have a link handy per chance? :d

Sygate was purchased by Symantec. Grab it now before it's no longer free. And I can predict a bad downhill for the product. Many years ago, Symantec bought the fabulous AtGuard firewall and totally butchered the product into a hunk of useless code...

Isn't that what Symantic always does?
They bought out Power Quest's Drive Image (my favorite), and I'm not sure what they've done to it... but no one I've heard from has anything good to say about it :(
I guess they didn't like that it was better than Ghost... so they had to buy it and destroy it :ttt:

Ghost and two other disk imagers were reviewed in a recent PC mag, of the three, Ghost was the worst one.
One of the ones tested was True Image by Acronis, I downloaded the trial version and tested and played with it for a few days, today I bought it.:)

Isn't it risky to be using an old firewall?

I don't normally bump threads but I'm still wondering if running an old firewall is safe.

ZoneAlarm 4 is still a very solid product. It's the last version made by ZoneLabs before they were bought out. The heart of the Internet (i.e. TCP/IP) hasn't changed in decades so ZA 4.5 is still very good.

Thanks. I thought that it might be risky to run an old firewall because there have been new exploits/worms detected since those versions came out.

If there are exploits or vulnerabilities that target that specific version of ZoneAlarm, I'm not aware of them. This is not like a virus scanner that you have to keep updated constantly.
