I've heard many techie saying that when Vista release next year, all Linux will be history except those server based mechines.

I beleive that could happen because linux distros are like pile of loose sands and the communities are too elegants and will eventually come to haunt them. On top of that, the funding is deminishing except Korea Sweden govt tend to show some support.

India is moving toward MS and China seems doing the same.

Don't think so... come to computer schools ie. seneca college, ryerson university, if your techie you love linux to a certain extent, in fact alot of people (including myself) im sure won't be getting vista anytime soon. I am still playing around with redhat, fedora core, suse, ubuntu, debian etc..

Everybody is a "techie" these days. I wouldn't trust my computer with these people if they "fixed" for free.

The Canadian Government has been moving to MS as well. Integrated Outlook and new .NET technologies are driving the push. In big business of 5k+ employees MS really doesn’t have an equal. When it comes to web servers, Linux’ greatest threat is the growing .NET community and the stability of Windows Server 2003. If Linux looses ground it will be because of this but it won't have anything to do with Vista. Java and the old scripting languages really can’t compete when it comes to OOP in the Visual Studio environment.

I've beta'd Vista and I think end users are going to be disappointed. From a personal computer standpoint it won’t be taking away anything from Mac or Linux and I too believe that a few might be driven from MS when they come to realize there is only marginal improvement over XP and it was all a cash crab. How odd would it be for MS to not come out with a new OS every 5 years? Something has to fuel that cash cow.

Vista is just a fancy GUI packaged with updated componants of Windows XP.

I should get Vista just to stay current for the clients and their Q's
as for it being responsible for the demise of Linux .. nope.
But I'm still waiting for Looking Glass

Sun had that project forever seems never going to take off because Linux community still scare of being sue of intergrate Java related products without Sun acknowledgement. Sun great works will eventually die when Microsoft come out a better products and eventually will replace it. A real opensource should truely free to stimulate popularity and without string attach.

I can't imagine Linux going anywhere as long as Windows operating systems cost a small fortune.

Microsoft new stratergy is to offer VISTA for free until Jul next year to hook people. Such marketing tactic will definitely work and many will take the bait, including me. The so call RC1 is ensure previous version winOS SP1 will never happen and SP2 in the pass will be future SP2. Microsoft figured they have nothing to lose anyway by leting you test for a period of time and adaptive will kick in and you have no choice but open your wallet. Sort of Google beta concept at your cost in future instead of advertisers: use 1st pay later.

VISTA is nothing new but mophing from winXP borrow technology from MacOS, Sun ProjectGlass3D, Linux and others. Same old copycat with a twist. The only technology is the programming .net bundles for developers.

If you haven't try it yet http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm
:) not try to promote it.

That's the reason I reconsider Linux future will be in danger or going no where even if it able to stay alive.

As a Linux user for more years than I care to remember I can tell you that we are not concerned by all the hype over Vista.

Vista is only free for those who have signed up for the beta testing programme and that's all it is, a beta programme, bugs and all! :)

...free until Jul next year to hook people...

Not aware of Linux distros expiring in less than a year.
Questionable way of defining the word "free"

Link provided is to Release candidate = Beta versions
Microsoft has been releasing alpha and beta versions of various OS prior to retail release for years.
Linux market percentage has steadily grown during those times.

done it, it sucks, slowed my 2.4ghz P4 system to a crawl. played with it for about six weeks before I got fed up. If you don't know it already, part of their vaunted security is anoying pop up messages everytime you try to install new software asking stupid questions like is this really you and do you really want to install this.

paranoia in the extreme
