Hi there. I am looking to find an alternative to Rogers High Speed in the Richmond Hill area. I currently have Rogers Extreme but do not like the service they are providing. I am not happy with the implimeted traffic management system that will not allow me to connect to P2P any longer.
I am looking for an alternative however Bell is not im my are yet. They have been saying that for years now.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Well, if you say that Bell isn't in your area I guess what you're saying is that you can't get DSL service... from Bell or anyone else...
That leave you stuck between a rock and a hard place.... No DSL means that cable is your only other high speed option.
There is satellite and microwave... but they are extremely expensive and no where near the speed of even Rogers Express service.
Hmmm.... doesn't look good for you :(

Whereabouts in Richmond Hill are you, I am in RH too and I have DSL. But if you are sure Bell is not available, like Dr. Dan says, you are out of luck. Complain to Rogers.

i know this topic is old but I'm living in richmond hill around Elgin Mills and the 404 and Rogers has terrible upload speeds. I'm happy with the down but want to host my own website at home instead of paying additional money to host it on-line.
It's a pretty simple site about contractors that work around the house and how good of a job they do. Really small with pictures and a few words. I tried hosting it from home and the speed was awful when hitting it from anywhere else.

Failing that, any suggestions on an inexpensive fast hosting company? Someone mentioned to me godaddy but i'm not sure do i need windows hosting or linux for my site?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Rogers does not allow servers anyway and if you have been using one then it would only be a matter of time until caught. It is against their TOS. Double check your DSL availability by using a DSL provider's tool like VIF's (http://wiki.vif.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:resadsl). Click on the CHECK AVAILBILITY and enter your number.
If you cannot get DSL service to your home then hosting elsewhere is your only alternative. 1and1 (http://www.businessgrowthhosting.com/budget.html) is very inexpensive, reliable, and plenty of bandwidth/storage allotment. Choice of Linux or Windows (I suggest Linux).

I am with TekSavvy and I love them, I pay $39.99 a month for unlimited service, no caps, I can have servers and that price includes a static IP. Check them out.

I must be lucky because here in Etobicoke, I have been running a unix mail and web server for almost 11 years, on Rogers :)

As I understand it, Rogers does not permit you to run services by their general TOS agreement, but I'll bet that you were originally a Shaw customer, who were lightyears better at 'customer service', and not placing any restrictions on you. I don't think you can get a static IP using them, and I recall that there was a time they would purposely rotate your IP more, if they detected that you were running services.
But I see absolutely nothing wrong with you paying for a domain name, then hosting a small web site on your own equipment, and doing your own mail, if you have the knowhow -- to me, when you go to an ISP, you're asking for an 'Internet connection' replete with all the endless possibilities that that entails!
You're likely using a dyndns.org type service with a very low expiry, so that even if they do change your IP, it won't take too long before someone's attempt to send mail finds your server again. Everyone should be able to do this!

If you're a patient sort, send me a private message with your address, and maybe I can look into whether or not Bell has scheduled some new hardware in your area that would enable you to have DSL as an option? I might be able to give you a general timeframe for when your options will be more... robust. :)

Hey Lutz. Thanks for all your help, Im up and running with Colosseum and the speed is fantastic. I took my Rogers crap modem back to the Rogers store today and that was a great way to start a Friday.
Anyway, easy setup, good speed, got my xbox , Tivo and wireless all up in half an hour. Thanks again
