A relative and I who lives relatively close want to set a Neighborhood Area Network with a wireless connection between us. He'll be the source of transmissions. I have tried connecting to his Linksys router but the signal is intermittent for a steady connection. To this point the signal only comes to a window of my home and then completely drops, up in the attic, and in the garage which is not attached to the house. So I need to know how to amplify that signal and in turn capture it via the NIC on the laptop or some other intermediate means. Please provide the specifics of the hardware required, where it can be purchased, and the cost. If someone knows how to build an antenna to achieve this then I would welcome this info also. TIA.

Why do you want to do this? How much are you willing to spend? Have you thought about security?

As Networkguy stated, could be costly and security would be an issue. Plenty of antennas available. Take a look at TigerDirect for a listing/selection (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=374&). No gaurantees, though, as local area conditions affect transmission and reception.

I read an article online somewhere that explained how to set up a sat dish to beam the wireless signal great distances - something like 5km depending on line of site/interference an so on

If you simply want to connect your home LAN's then I would suggest buying two linksys vpn routers and connecting your home LAN's this way.

The purpose of this is to reduce the cost to the ISP. We plan on having one bill and splitting it between the two of us. In terms of how much we are planning to spend about $300 max. With respect to security all that will be taken care of to the extent it can be by only allowing the MAC of our computers to connect for one.

I got the Linksys Range Expander and able to get a good connection. Unfortunately, I cannot browse the internet. Connecting to the router directly is no problem but using the Range Expander somehow is not making things work. The problem is that I cannot get an IP address. I have tried using the automatic settings and static ones as well without success. If anyone has a solution to this then I would appreciate a response or at least pointing me in the right direction.
