Hi there.I had a friend install a burner (BENQ 52x32x52) on my daughters computer but it seems that it has never worked.I have tried to install it but the computer (XP) does not find any new hardware and I don't have the original CD to install. Can anyone tell me in SIMPLE terms how to check to make sure it is hooked up properly and how to then install it?T here is power, that I know.
Thank you.

Google!!! Google !!! tons of info.!!! http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_cd.htm
Does the burner show up in " my computer" ?
Check the device manager - control panel - system - hardware - device manager
it should be listed under cd-rom crives. Is there a exclamation mark beside it.

Thanks for the Foner books help.I can see now that the connection to the motherboard is from the CDROM and not from the burner.Do I have to change the connection?
And no,the device is not listed in the device manager. The only hardware recognized is the CDROM.
ok, it sounds like maybe the ide cable isn't correct.
I recommend having the burner on the second ide channel set as the master and the cdrom and hard drive on the 1st ide channel.
It's possible that the ide cable is on upside down
