Win XP Home probs.

Last week i was asking if anyone knew of a third party free defragger.

Had a couple answers with tips, such as defrag in safe mode.

Tried that and in reg.mode. keeps on hanging up at 1% compacting.

I had the PC running for a couple hours and it didn't move.Only have 8.88 GB

files on the HDD.Should be able to defrag in 1/2 hr or less.

Ever since i installed SP2 from a CD this and other problems started.

I formatted HDD 2 times, that didn't help. Had to uninstall Sygate personal

Firewall, cause it was completely wacky, after SP2, at startup DR.Watson

made his presence known...Guess Sygate and SP2 don't get along with each

other.

So if someone knows of a fairly safe thirdparty defragger, free of course:)

pleeease list it here...... thanx

Go to RUN
Type in %temp%
Click OK
DELETE ALL
then try again from Safe mode
Also:
you never said that you did every spyware, malware and virus tests
even though you said you formated. As soon as M$ connects to the web you will be infected before you can download the tools to keep you safe.
download Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Took your tip andy..didn't work...just finished letting it sit there for over

2 hrs. at 1% compacting files... probably have to reformat and forget about

SP2...maybe i should ask for another CD...maybe the one i have is faulty..

it was one of the first ones M$ send out...:vxd:

BTW, i did every test before i formatted.AVG.Spybot.Ad-Aware etc.

Have u tried defragging from an msdos command prompt?

Just type 'defrag <volume>' For example if you wantted to defrag your C: drive type
'defrag c:'

Try just doing this from that Command prompt from the same menu where you select Safe mode, or try in normal windows just make sure the disk defragmenter isnt running.

Have u tried Downloading SP2 on your own? or are you on a connection it will take a while (56k)?

Or perhaps bad disk sectors... How much % of free space is on the drive your trying to defrag?

No issues encountered as of yet, with SP2 and Sygate in multiple systems.

Same here - have that combo running in 3 different systems with no issues.
