it would seem the line running to the house from the pole out back is rahter old and its causeing errors on the internet and croos talk on the phones.

do i have to pay to get it replaced or is its bells job to replace that line?

As long as the problem is out side Bell is responsable for that, your responsable for everything inside your place , you'd be best to invest in Bell's wire care plan I have it on my line and I think I'm paying $5.00 a month for it that will cover work done on your inside line :)

they do but I don't use it. my opinion its just another cash crab by bell.
if its outside they pay. just remember most phone problems are caused
by the customer plugging crap on the line. I am in NO way saying you
are doing this,, but it happens so often. if you have problems in the future.
remove all devices from the line and test one at a time. if the problem
doesn't go away its most likely outside.

I just had mine replace about 6 weeks ago. Bell does it at no cost. They will also install a terminal box just outside your house and then put a new master terminal inside (not sure of the correct term) as well as a new ground. Their responsibility ends there.

The outside box allows you to hook a phone in and determine if problems are with the line or the inside connections.

My phones were unoperable at times but my internet connection never failed, the tech said that internet connections will work on almost anything. Are you using Symaptico as your provider as well?

getting cross talk and other peoples conversations and static big time.

internet works but with the added speed the lines are causeing errors and odd behavior at times.

best guess is the lines and the too metal boxes are over 50 yrears old.

sounds like a scam that $5 a month

all you need is a box of quad (4 conductor wire) or even cat5e and a general knowledge of how a phone line works (red - ring, green - tip) 2 wire, easy as pie, and your set.

In the long run bell is getting lots of money from you if you pay that $5 a month charge.

When Bell lost their monopoly on phone service, and the CRTC opened the doors to allow you to own your own phones and allowed other long distance providers (and now other local providers), they needed to implement the $5/mo plan for service calls and repairs. Can't blame them. This was a massive change in their income structure. The service plan is optional, and only covers from the home demarkation point and your inside wiring. Anything outside is their responsibility. Just make sure that it isn't your equipment or self installed inside wiring causing the problem, or, if you don't have the service plan, it could cost you.

Not everyone is intersested either b00t, some would rather let the pros do it and apply their talents to more suited areas.

Thankyou Frogy for understanding the point that I was trying to make.

b00t: If you have the time and are capable of doing it your self go for it. I won't sit here and Argue with you, personally I would prefer to get someone in here that knows what they are doing :)

No need to be defensive, swordfish. The $5 is an investment if it gives you peace of mind. Don't let anyone make you feel like less of a person. It's your money, end of story. *shrug*

I happen to agree that it's a great cash cow for Bell. Kudos to them for thinking of it!Lots of folks are not comfortable with adding phone lines or troubleshooting problems, and Bell is horrible to get through for assistance. (I will never again have a sympatico internet connection!) This is no different than an insurance plan, imho.

make sure you watch them like a hawk, they tend to fix something, but mess up another, every once in awhile :D
