View Full Version : new stove ??
We're looking at getting a new stove and had a few questions.
There seems to be an awful lot of those new smooth top stoves. The thing is, I love using some cast iron cookware, and I heard they're not recommended. I have stainless steel, but I don't want to be limited to that. Anyone using those and what are your thoughts?
I'm looking at the 'old fashioned' coil stoves, wondered are there alternatives, and what are some good options besides the brick/sears/leons blah blah here in Toronto.

Serious cooks have a gas top and electric oven, what they call dual-fuel ranges. But they are pricey.
Check out this (http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prdct/dualfuel/) page for starters. :)

Tim, do you have natural gas in the house? I, like you, love my cast iron pans and opted for a dual fuel stove. It has a convection oven as well as electrical elements in the oven for broiling, etc. We considered the glass top and rejected it because of the cast iron issue and opted for a Maytag. (I like the 4cuft oven too)
Here is a listing of some of the dealers in TO

One that I used to sell many years ago is Caplan's

I have a Maytag Gemini (http://www.maytag.com/mths/products/product.jsp?model=MER6775AAW&cs=0&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes) and am very happy with it. The dual ovens are great, both when you have a lot of stuff that requires oven space or if you're cooking something small and want a small oven that heats up quickly. I've read good and bad reviews on it but personally I'm pleased with it. Home depot carries this and a bunch of other ranges at good prices with free delivery.
I go on the cheap. Microwave whenever possible :d

We have an electric convection stove. I would like gas but mother is afraid that the house will blow up :eyeroll:

i wish i had one of those houses with 2 ovens, like built into the wall. Then the huge countertop stove. With the 6 gas burners for pots and then a gas grill next to it. that would pwn too much.
(yeh i know it has nothing to do with the posters question, but i had to say it)

With what you detail, they paid less for their Matrix. ;)

We have the Gemini gas cook-top and oven. We love it, but the only draw back is the gas oven. Takes what seems like forever for the oven to get up to temp to broil. The stainless steel looks great in the kitchen too! :bsu:
