View Full Version : Question about licence plates
Is it mandatory to have a front plate on a car in Ontario?
Reason I ask is that I often see cars with no front plates here. I know that front plates are not mandatory in many US states (and maybe some Canadian provinces??)

Yes, we MUST have a plate attached to the front of the vehicle... and must be clearly displayed... and no, displaying it in the windshield doesn't count; as many think it does.
Thanks Dan....that's what I thought, although it tends to ruin the looks of many a gorgeous front ends :(

Yep... :(
And every time we try to lobby for it's removal, we get their list of reasons as to why they want it on there...
Things like "for police to easily ID a car from the front" or "if you see a hit and run you can get the plate #..."
Typical goverment BS...

Maybe if you see a "hit and back-up" it might work that way.
It's just a crock. A power trip so that parking control officers don't have to walk to the back of your car.
Lazy *******s are costing us gas mileage due to poor aerodynamics.
IMO.
What's the fine if you're caught without a front plate?

Without looking it up, I believe it $108...

Gotta wonder about the extra $8.00 lol....does that portion go into a benevolent fund? :d

Yes it is mandatory in Ontario if your vehicle is registered here.
1 province is exempt for sure, (Quebec) and maybe more that I don't know about.

That wouldn't surprise me. Quebec has always been way ahead of good ole' boring Ontario in so many ways....except for the "no right turn on a red light" part lol

I know NS also doesn't use a front plate :)
I'll see if I can find the page on who does and how doesn't...

interesting conversation just yesterday while driving I saw a city bus
with a plate that had the numbers washed off and commented to my better
half that it would be illegal for me to drive around with such a plate.
any way the only time I can think of is a dealers plate only on the back.
last year I was asked to remove the clear plastic cover on my front plate
it had yellowed so much from the sun the lettering was hard to see. I just
bought a new one:)

There was an article in the Ottawa Sun the other day regarding the education plan of the police re: traffic vioaltions and one of them mentioned that one is not allowed to cover their plates with any plastic coverings (coloured or clear). The fine is about $140 or so.
I haven't looked this up yet, but it doesn't seem to be enforced too much since there's so many of these covers around.

Unless I'm not looking in the right place, this is all I can find.

Forget it.
I've reported a plate number that was obviously made very dirty. The cops told me they would have to actually catch the driver on the road. They would not follow up using just the registration, which I gave them via the plate number.
I almost had to hit his bumper with mine to actually read it.
