I figured a post about this would have already existed, but it didn't come up in my search, so apologies if it's already been covered....

I have two versions of Messenger installed. Ver. 4.7 and Ver. 7.0.

Naturally, I only want to use the current version, but Ver. 4.7 always loads and signs on when I start up XP and then I have to click to sign on with 7.0.

How can I get rid of Ver. 4.7. Ver. 7.0 is in the Add or Remove Programs list, but 4.7 isn't.

Thanks!

Go to add/remove under windows componants and uncheck Windows Messenger That should remove it from the start menu and prevent it from starting up with Windows.

Cool, I never noticed that before! Thanks, we'll see if it does the trick when I reboot.

If that doesn't work (it sometimes doesn't), click Start>Run and in the box, copy this line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

you *may* have to reinstall version 7.0, but rest assured the Windows Messenger will finally be gone.
