Make it easy and get wireless, but make sure to do the following:

1. Turn on WEP/WAP
2. Change the routers password
3. Turn off SSIB broadcast
4. Turn on MAC Filtering

It's not 100% secure(if someone REALLY wants in they will take the time to find a way in) but it's MUCH better then leaving it WIDE open.

(the quote above is from another thread)

wireless newbie = (me)

i have a wireless router but right now i am only using the wired ports of it. Eventually i will buy a wireless card for my laptop.

I have a D-link Di-514

when i buy a wireless card is there a certain type that I will have to look for to be compatible with my router?

Also in that list what do those things mean?

you should set up the security wether you are using wireless or not... cause anyone can still access it just in case you havent done so :) and im not sure but your wireless card should function on the same frequency as the router no?

You do not need to worry about WEP until you are ready to use wireless. The WEP settings must be the same on both the broadcasting router and the receiving device.
As far as security is concerned, look for a setting to enable wireless. Make sure this setting is set to OFF!
There may be firewall settings with the router to handle security for the wired ports.
The router you mention runs at the slower "b" protocol (11Mb/s). Any "b" will work fine. Any "g" (54Mb/s) should be backward compatible. Hope this helps.

with my slower router, will it slow down my internet connection. or is DSL not that fast?

No, it shouldn't slow your internet... you can only dream about 11MB internet speeds :d

The only thing that's slower is is if you're transfering files from one computer to another within your home network.

Both computers have to be in the same workgroup. Yes, they both have to be on.

workgroup?

why did my router not come with information for shareing files?

Can anyone point me to a good online manual to help me do this (if it is complicated)

(i know i can google but sometimes i come across complicated things)

As it tells you in the quick start guide, the full manual is available online... you can get it here:
http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=226#manual

Also, it's up to the router manufacturers to tell you how to use the router; not a whole network.
Basicly, you can access the other computers on the network by browsing for them in 'Network Places'.
