hello all,I'm an intermediate computer user and have always installed my own hardware without many issues, but this weekend I've installed a toshiba DVD burner and experienced some issues.after installing the writer into the tower and re hooking everything up,I started up windows expecting it would recognize that new hardware was installed, but it didn't.windows would just start up normally,I tried manually installing the driver but couldn't seem to find one that works with the drive.worse yet somehow my computer doesn't recognize the original CD writer now either both show as unknown devices in my hardware profile.I've tried everything but can't seem to get either drive recognized now,I really need some help here.the DVD writer I installed is a toshiba SD-R5272 and my original factory installed writer is a liteon LTR-4247S,I've looked everywhere for a driver but can't find one for either.if someone could offer some advise or link to where I could find the drivers I'd be very grateful.I'm running windows 98SE on a 2.6Ghz celeron HP.

Where is your hard drive connected? It looks like the problem lies with the ide controllers. Try removing both controllers from Device Manager, shut down, unplug both optical drives, then restart. See if your ide controllers reinstall properly. Then shut down and try adding one optical drive at a time. You shouldn't need drivers for the optical drives, but depending on the motherboard, you possibly may need them for the ide controllers (should still work without, even so).

I just worry that if I unistall it,I'll lose my hard drive connection as well.will I be ok unistalling the master ide controller like the warning tells me to do,without losing my hard drive connection?

Yes, it should be fine. Windows should just detect and reinstall. If not, you should still be back where you started. 2 other things to check. When you right click on My Computer - Properties, check the Performance tab. Is there a box there stating that some of the drives are operating in MS-Dos Compatibility Mode? If so, check these articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=151911
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q130179/
http://www.md4pc.com/questions/34.htm

You may also want to check in Safe Mode to see if there are multiple drives listed in Device Manager and delete the extras.
