Humm only appears when I try to record from VCR using Rosoft on computer!

Before I moved I have cables that stretched 22 feet between the VCR and my computer. I have not noise or humm on the line at all! I recorded from cassettes short pieces of sefl improvement type infomertials.

I have two more to record and now the distance between the VCR and the computer is only 6 feet and I have a noisy humm on both L line showing up on R line.

Do I have to install stereo volume control pots ( I have one somewhere) ?
What value do I need 10 Ohm?

The recording is recorded in stereo but both lines are really mono. I am using Rosoft Audio Recorder Free which has no volume control. It's very basic recorder which works very well for my small jobs.

Thanks for the info !

simple recorder there should be a simple answer.

Now I must say I don't know how you used 22' cables and got no hum,
well it could work.
any way think back to your setup before the move what has changed?
from your post I can see you changed the cables maybe there not up to the
job try the old ones. also the computer is hooked up in a different place.
first check the ground connection for the computer at the wall if its faulty
it could cause hum while recording. might be a good idea to check the player
as well. another trick that has worked for me in the past is attach a wire to the
back of the player (any screw on the back metal part) to the to the screw
on the wall plug. you should not need a separate volume control if it worked
in the past. one last thing to check since you moved the computer if you
have a sound card turn the computer off and reseat the sound card by
pulling it out then pushing it back in.

Did you change electrical outlets?
Is the vcr on the same outlet as the computer now?

Sounds like the hum or noise is a type of feedback. Try moving the unit a little farther apart.

What I believe you have is a ground loop problem as has been touched on by others. Its very common when dealing with cables and audio. This might be of some help. http://www.epanorama.net/documents/groundloop/

Experienced it before when hooking up DJ systems...annoying but can easily be resolved.

thats a great resource link Mander.
understanding why you have the problem is half the battle in removing
the problem. one thing I do know for sure computers and sound equipment
can pose many problems but it can be done.
