My son has bought a 140 yr old house that has not been kept up ver well the last several years and there are squirrels in the attic. 2 weeks ago we plugged all the holes and were rid if them for about a week and a half... they have found a new way in...
Just wondering if anyone has ever tried the sonic repeling devices that are available... they emit a adjustable high freq sound that is supposed to repel the squirrel but not bother humans or pets.

Try putting an old radio in attic tuned to talk radio - really works on getting rid of "vermin".

Put a TV in the attic playing a TCM episode. One look at that cat and be gone.

I tried them and it did not work. I had to call the pro's in and that was it they were gone and never returned.

Agree with calling in the pros. Why bother with trying to get rid of them yourself? The pros can spot holes that you may have overlooked. Do it once and get it gone completely.

Episodes only air in the Oshawa area ;)

Thanks for the advice but have contacted a couple of professionals and they do not want to touch it because the house is so old and the soffits in rough shape...say the squirrels will just come right back in... that is why I am looking for something to repell them for this year until can do new facia and soffits in the spring... guess they just live with them for the winter.

Here's a write up from a guy trapping and relocating the furry friends.
http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/squirrels.htm
When we lived in Virginia we had a neighbour that was a birdlover and he had all kinds of feeders out there. A welcome invitation for squirrels. He hated them and he would trap them and relocate them accross the local reservoir.
I think the more he relocated the more seem to come. The wife and I used to tease him and say that they probably ride right back home on his back bumper.

I've found the only real effective thing is bromone http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/rodent/bromadiolone/rod-prof-bromadiolone.html
It's not a repellant per say but it works for getting rid of them. Obviously I don't particularly care for rodents. (that statement doesn't include our resident Mouse :ggl:)

It will kill them, but you have to get them to eat it...I've ground up the pellets to a fine powder and then mixed it with peanut butter...squirrels just love peanut butter...if you don't grind it into a fine powder they will just spit the pellets out...YOU ALSO HAVE TO PUT THIS IN A PLACE WHERE ONLY SQUIRRELS CAN GET AT IT...DON'T WANT TO KILL YOUR KIDS, THE NEIGHBOR'S CAT, AND IT MAYBE ILLEGAL DEPENDING UPON YOUR LOCAL BYLAWS...

What about the smell of rotting squirrel flesh???
What about the smell of rotting squirrel flesh???
The times I did it I got lucky and they died outside...which presents the problem of other things eating them...there isn't a good solution other than replacing the soffits...

I was watching "This Old House" on PBS, and they had this light thing that blinks every few seconds. You put it in the attic and it will scary them away.
