What motherboard is it? Before we can help, we will need to find a motherboard manual somewhere which explains what it looks like and how the fan is assembled.

if its not the cpu it could be the northbrige chip I have found some are clipped
and some are glued on. http://www.arcticsilver.com/adhesive_instructions.htm

Motherboard (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rc/index.htm) The motherboard is Make Intel Desktop D865GBF/D865PERC

I am also putting a p4 1.6 in the board and some one told me it should not matter to much if that was the only cpu i was putting in it
