I recently installed antivirus software form Computer Associates that has been advertised as part of the Rogers Yahoo online protection software. I immediately initiated a scan after the installation was complete, which was Saturday afternoon. As of Tuesday morning, the scan is still running. The program has not frozen, as the number of files scanned is continually increasing. I used to run Norton Antivirus 2002 before my subscription ran out, and it never took more than 30 minutes. Has anyone else used this antivirus software, and is this it's normal speed for scanning files?

On another note, it has found some infected files in the c:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder, which Norton never found. I have googled this folder name for more info, and what I have read is that in order to clean those files, I have to disable system restore from the control panel, reboot, rescan, and then re-enable system restore. Is this correct?

Yes.

Reagrding the first part of your question (omitted), do you have any programs running that might interfere? Have you tried running it in safe made, that will probably shorten your time considerably.

I can't remember if this is the one that does it or not, but there may be a setting for a continual scan... where it scans files any time the computer is idle.

I've tried a few different ones a few months back, and I didn't care for any of them as much as AVG.

My advice; uninstall that AV from the rest of the Rogers bundle, and install AVG

No it's not normal.
Don't know what's causing it though.
For what it's worth. I think it's a better antivirus than AVG.
You'll find test results on it under the VET name.
CA uses VET under license.

You should stop the scan.
Try it in safe mode as Frogy suggests.
Or
Try an on-line scan at Housecall.
Disable the real time monitor or set it to snooze for 90 minutes.
You can disable snooze at any time.

See what happens.

I just read that AVG is not a strong AV so I just gave another program to use. No harm in using Avast.

I use Mcafee 2005 and it is superb!

"On another note, it has found some infected files in the c:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder, which Norton never found."
NortonAV by default does not scan the restore folder. Virii cannot run from the restore folder. If you try to activate a restore point Norton will then see it and then flag the virus.

Norton can also be a PITA to remove completely and then cause problems with the new antivirus software. Try running the removal tool for Norton 2002

Attackkitty, I have also recently downloaded the rogers yahoo antivirus software and I find it takes a long time also, however, not as long as it took for you to do a full scan. I find it better then Norton...

Thanks for the advice so far. All the infected files have been cleaned from the _resore\temp folder. It appears that soon I will be formatting my harddrive and upgrading to WindowsXP and I'm wondering if I should continue with this antivirus form Rogers Yahoo, go back to Norton, or try something new?

Rogers Yahoo! Online Protection is a pretty complete package.
And you can't beat the price (free)

The anti-spyware is Pestpatrol (also from CA)
The anti-virus is CA's e-trust EZ (VET engine)
You also get Parental controls and a spam filter.
( from what I gather spam is problem with Roger's)

All of that is a decent package.

----
If you want to try others, use their trial versions first.
Don't buy them. Uninstall the previous one first.
You could then add a free antispyware app from Microsoft.

The new e-trust ez interface is actually quite nice. Though Roger's seems to have mucked it up .
It's a light anti-virus which doesn't use too many resources.

I think you'd be fine with that package.
But you should use what you are comfortable with, and what suits your own needs.
----
The lightest anti-virus, very good, but quite minmalist is F-prot ( inexpensive as well):
http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/win/
I liked it.

Kaspersky , or Kaspersky clones are the other end of the spectrum.
They are first rate anti-viruses, but they can slow a system down.
F-Secure is a kaspersky clone.

TrendMicro (pcillin) is between the two.

Here's a microsoft page which has links to various anti-virus trials:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/windows9x/antivirus.mspx

* Computer Associates (12-month free trial)-- same one Roger's uses
* F-Secure (6-month free trial)
* McAfee (90-day free trial)
* Panda Software (90-day free trial)
* Symantec (Norton) (90-day free trial)
* Trend Micro (90-day free trial)

I uninstalled AVG to try the Yahoo Companion. It took about 40 minutes on my comp.
C+D=100 gigs. divided into two partions and E+F=120 gigs. divided into 2 partitions.
Both the antivirus and the spyware scanners seem to work extremely well (Win XP Home).

Here's something you might use.

Here's a link to :eicar an Anti-Virus test file.
This is a harmless piece of code that the manufacturers have agreed to treat as a virus.
You can use it see how your antivirus reacts. To test your settings etc.

I am a big fan of AVG , more for the low over head and the protection it provides.

But with the Rogers submission of the antivirus I removed AVG and Microsoft Antivirus and have found it works well.

Before I recommended it to Rogers users I dove in head first and found it has done very well. It is made by the same company that made Inoculate that I used for years until they went pay.

As far as Norton and Mcfee , well in my years I have found them to be hard to keep updated and because we wanted one for everyone (including those that can't pay) well The Rogers Yahoo antivirus is great so far.

I still use InnoculateIT for free :)

It's part of Computer Associates corporate anti-virus, which also includes a second anti-virus engine, VET (same one Roger's uses).

It was this promotion:

"In support of Microsoft's launch of Windows Server 2003, we are offering you a fully licensed copy of our award-winning eTrust Antivirus v 7 for FREE. This is not a trial version that will time out after 30 days or is limited in functionally."

I'm very pleased with it.
It's been taken off their website, but I still have a download link to it, if you like.
