I was tinkering with the idea of putting on an extra hardrive and adding Xandros. I was thinking maybe i could use this old computer for web surfing with firefox/Xandros and keep windows 98 that have some applications that work only with it.
I am loathing the thought of of getting XP only to have security updates stop in the near future and to buy a whole new computer for Vista which will have
obsessively restrictive Digital Rights management features.
I would just use 128 megs of ram on my computer.
Is this plan viable?
I have an AMD processor equivalant to about a P3 800 mhtz.

Xandros it one of the more Windows like/friendly distros out there. It should run on your P3, but check their recommendations first. Running something like the Beryl Manager would be too taxing (its mostly eye candy anyway) on a system that old.
I've never played with Xandros, but I would suggest running a custom install so that intensive graphics get left out (no OpenGL for you unless you have video to support it).
I would even consider a legacy version of a distro.

I am running kubuntu on a cerly 800 with 128 not fast but does the trick.
I think you will do ok. thing is 128meg ram does slow things down.
try to upgrade to 256.

I use Xandros and I think you will find that you need 256MB absolute minimum and preferably 512MB or more is really needed.

Xp pro will have a longer support period than XP home, apparently.
Xp pro has a 5 year extended support phase which includes security fixes.
The extended support starts when mainstream support ends.
Xp home does not have the extended support phase.

I just installed Ubuntu on an old P3, and would highly recommend it. The entire install was on an .iso image that fit onto a single CD. Ubuntu recognized all the hardware and automatically configured the NIC. The basic install included Open Office 2.0, and Firefox 2.0. So it has everything you need for basic surfing and home applications.
Might be worth seeing if you could get a a 256 meg stick of PC100 or PC133 (whatever your machine takes). Should be able to get a stick for about 50 dollars.
