View Full Version : Biting the bullet

Ok, I've decided to bite the bullet and build the Conroe system I always wanted. Annnd because that Gateway system turned out to be a dud since they did a piss poor job of "refurbishing" their damn computer. The power button was stuck inside the case...thank the lord I was able to try it before I bought it. I didn't even bother fixing it and packed it right back in the box. It just left a sour taste in my mouth.
So here goes...

The final price is 1376.94 + the cost of a case which I'm thinking of buying locally. Any additions or subtractions appreciated. Comments and critiques welcomed. Any case recommendations also appreciated.
Thanks.

Nah...spending $100 for 270mhz and extra couple of megs of cache is not for me. But thanks for your input.

Personally, I'd go for the E6300 clocked at 1.86 GHz (easily overclocked to 2.4 stable & cool)...

The PSU you picked is overkill... I'm sure you can find another at a lower output and price

Do you really need a X1950 if you're not a hard core gamer?

I want something to handle BF2, Fear, FarCry...stuff like that decently. And at ~200 it's a steal, no?

I have the same MB, good choice, I would go with the x1950 instead of the pro, virtually the same card but quite a bit cheaper without a huge hit in performance.

hey networkguy, people have been recommending the p5b for e6400 cpus...the difference between that and the p5w price wise is not that much...should I stick with the w or buy the b instead? I do want to mess around with overclocking but nothing major.

Agreed with Dr. Dan...the E6300 is a better value IMO. Other than that it looks like an extremely solid system.

I dont know much about the P5B you'd have to read some threads and find out why people prefer it to the P5W, personally I love the P5W and it overclocks easily, but if there are features the P5B has that the P5W doesn't or you feel there are features the P5W has that you don't want then maybe that will help you pick. I'd also go for a higher clocked chip, I went with the E6600.

Are you overclocking at all? What sort of results are you getting?

So I went with the P5B deluxe with the OCZ plats rev 2 6400 instead of the gold.
Now I play the waiting game and if I made a mistake then i'll go sit in the corner and cry myself to sleep every night.

Yeah I'm overclocking, nothing serious right now, just at 3.117GHz, but I plan on putting on a serious cpu fan, upgrading my PS and trying to push the CPU and RAM further.

I missed this thread..sorry
better late than not at all I guess..
I would have gone for the E6600 aswell.. for sure..
As for the P5B vs P5W some peeps have better luck oc'ing higher( fsb) than with the P5W, but if you not oc'ing then either board is overkill..
Other than that everything looks great..

I'll definitely be messing around with OCing. I think I made the right choices for now.
Thanks for your input.
PS I r jealous of your 8800.
