Depends on what you are doing ... usually, no.
1GB is a fair amount of RAM.

Chances are you're not even using the 1 gig you have in there now. 512 is more than enough for most systems.

awesomejs - This has been asked many times. Use the search feature before starting a new thread. You do not need more ram and it's not likely to make a noticeable difference.

lo, I have 768MB of RAM in my main machine. Little difference between 512MB. But then again, going to 2GB might help if you run a crap load of programs.

Same here... even when doing video encoding I don't use the 768 that I have.

If you were running enough apps to need 2 gigs of ram, I think Windows would probably crash first ;)

I use 1GB. Was using 512 but found that it bogged-down if using PhotoShop and a bunch of other programs at the same time. No problems at 1GB.

I use 2GB on the machine that does the 3D rendering, much faster than it was with 1GB. As always it depends on what the machine is used for. :)

My opinion: Unless you are doing a lot of multimedia and you work with gigantic pictures in Photoshop, then no. Stick with what you have.

1 gig should do ya unused ram is just a waste but if its used as mentioned
its a good thing to have. I run 512 now and have another 512 waiting to go
in. that will be the highest I'll go.

It could actually slow your PC down! (although it would possibly be dificult to measure)

Put simply, any increase in RAM results in a slow down, since more RAM has to be serviced and this takes time. When you don't have enough RAM to do what you need to, the slowdown caused by the increase in RAM is negligable when compared to the increase in speed as a result of not having to use as much virtual memory (on the HD). You can think of it as having more bathrooms - the convenience (excuse the pun!) of not having to wait against the extra time to clean them!

So once you have enough for what YOU need, any more is just throwing money down the toilet. 1 gig may be enough for most people, but others will find 2 gig barely enough.

I am sure that there are others who can suggest the best way to monitor/determine your actual requirements.

I concur with what most people say here, unless you are doing things such as 3D rendering, using photoshor or other RAM intensive programs, 512-1G is more then enough, any more then that and your wasting your money.
