Hi there:

oops i was trying to get a jpg file to "open with" Adobe Photoshop CS2 and pointed to the shortcut on my desktop by mistake. (Pointing to the Photoshop CS2 programme defaulted to the file opening with the previous version of Photoshop). I didn't want this to be a permanent association.

Anyway, you can see from the attached file that i now have this blank think listed in the "other programmes" list. It's not doing any harm, but i would like to get rid of it cause it's bugging me.

i'm running winxp pro with service pack 2, and am not all that comfortable editing the registry, but could do it, if i know what i'm looking for... i'd hate to take out the wrong thing. i know WHERE to look HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\FileExts but am not exaclty sure what key to look for.

there are a few listed in the registry under jpg (see the other attachments) but like i said, i'm not sure which one to delete to get things back to the way they were this morning. Doing a system restore would take me too far back.

i ran ccleaner too but didn't see anything there that seemed to be what i was looking for.

thanks in advance for your help...

In windows explorer, right click on the file and then choose open with. Just make sure there is a check in the box that states use this program for this type of file. Choose save.

hmmmmmmmmmm thanks but i don't think that that would get rid of it from being listed the "open with" list.

anyone else?

If you choose the program you want and choose always use selected program, I dont see why it wont work.

the association works, but i'm still left with that "thing" in the other program list... i want to remove the one that doesn't work from the list...

thanks

thanks frosty and mander - i did check out the clear dynamic, but i still don't see exactly what i'm looking to clear - if you look at the first attachment.... it's the entry circled in red.

Have you tried assigning the association to the REAL program (whatever that may be), as Mander suggested, and see if the other one disappears?

Found this , But it's for windows 2000
How to Remove Programs from the "Open With" List
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=258860

Apparently once you use a program to open a certain file association it goes onto the "dynamic list"
Whether it worked or not.

"For example, if you select Microsoft Paint in the Open With dialog box when you open a text document (a file with a .txt extension), the Paint program is listed in the Open With list for all text documents, even though Paint is unable to open text documents."

the option that i want to get rid of shows up for all file types... when i right click on a file, and choose "open with" , the thing i want to get rid of is here under "choose program"... "other programs".... it is from the "other program" list that i want it removed.
