Which will you get?

As the Big Three (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) planned their business tactics for the next-generation console wars, none have been willing to divulge their strategies, lest competitors get the scoop. All that was left was for industry media, fans, and analysts to speculate on what would be of the new consoles. http://adlog.com.com/adlog/i/r=7027&s=501815&t=2005.08.18.02.55.56&o=1:&h=pi&p=&b=4&l=En_US&&site=6&pt=&nd=/http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/Ads/common/dotclear.gif
In its quest to get the console out in time for the holiday season, Microsoft hasn't exactly kept the shutters drawn on its secrets regarding its next-gen contribution: the Xbox 360. Pictures of the console surfaced before its debut on MTV, its name was exposed before the company could spin it itself, and the prospect of standard wireless controllers came with no strings attached.

Today, Microsoft laid down new facts about its upcoming console at the Games Convention in Leipzig, and they sounded awfully familiar to analyst predictions and forum posters' speculations.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 will be released in two SKUs, the "Xbox 360 Core System" and the "Xbox 360." The two products will be sold at $299 and $399, respectively. The two systems break down as follows:

Xbox 360 Core System - $299 (299 Euros, 209 GBP)
•Xbox 360 console
•Wired controller
•Detachable faceplate
•Xbox Live Silver membership
•Standard AV cables

Xbox 360 - $399 (399 Euros, 279 GBP)
•Xbox 360 console
•20GB detachable hard drive
•Wireless controller
•Wireless Xbox Live headset
•High-definition AV cables
•Ethernet cable
•Xbox 360 Media Remote Control (limited time)
•Detachable faceplate
•Xbox Live Silver membership

Peter Moore, Xbox corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing, who spoke with GameSpot, reiterated that the Xbox 360 is still on schedule to launch simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Japan this holiday season. Details on the specifics of the Japanese release will be disclosed at this year's Tokyo Game Show, which begins September 16.

Microsoft has confirmed that the "Core System" will not be backwards compatible out-of-the-box. In order to play current-generation Xbox games, owners of the bare-bones system will have to purchase the detachable hard drive. It is unclear whether or not backwards compatibility will work with the smaller-capacity 64MB memory cards.

Moore explained that the idea behind the two choices came from "lessons learned from the first generation [of Xbox], but perhaps more importantly to provide the gamer with choices in pricing as applicable to their gaming habits." In addition, gamers will be able to select from a range of peripherals available at launch:

• Faceplate ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
• Hard Drive (20 GB) ($99.99, 99.99 Euros, 69.99 GBP)
• Memory Unit (64 MB) ($39.99, 34.99 Euros, 22.99 GBP)
• Wireless Networking Adapter ($99.99, 79.99 Euros, 59.99 GBP)
• Wireless Controller ($49.99, 44.99 Euros, 32.99 GBP)
• Play and Charge Kit ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
• Rechargeable Battery Pack ($11.99, 14.99 Euros, 9.99 GBP)
• Controller ($39.99, 34.99 Euros, 24.99 GBP)
• Headset ($19.99, 19.99 Euros, 14.99 GBP)
• Universal Media Remote ($29.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)
• Component HD AV Cable ($39.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)
• S-Video AV Cable (US) ($29.99)
• SCART AV Cable (Europe) (24.99 Euros, 17.99 GBP)
• VGA HD AV Cable ($39.99, 29.99 Euros, 19.99 GBP)

It's too early to get a reaction from gamers on Microsoft's pricing plan, but a few analysts privy to the information were able to chime in with their thoughts.

One anonymous analyst who spoke with GameSpot said, "I think tiered pricing makes sense, particularly as Microsoft wants to offer hardcore gamers more-advanced services. $299 is clearly a price leader and headline grabber, but I imagine they initially expect to ship (and sell) a majority of units at the higher price point. Also, with a $299 SKU, they avoid disappointing consumers, who are likely to compare launch pricing with the PS2 in 2000 and original Xbox in 2001."

The analyst adds, "As far as the publishers are concerned, Microsoft needs to make sure that publishers are making games that can be played with or without a hard drive, and I think they are communicating this message."

Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Morgan Securities, wasn't as cheerful. He sees the $299 model as a "publicity stunt." "They're doing it to say they are launching at $299. The hardcore guys will absolutely not buy the $299 model...only a complete idiot would buy the $299 model."

Pachter references Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi's statement saying the PlayStation 3 would "be expensive" (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/22/news_6129611.html) as an attempt to "psych Microsoft into charging $399." But, he sees the $399 price point as providing Microsoft with breathing room to lower the price once the PS3 is released, which is projected to be in 2006, or even 2007.

Regarding the release date, Moore said there have been no announcements made primarily for competitive reasons, but also because Microsoft was still monitoring the production flow of the console's components and localization of launch titles. "One thing we won't do is underserve the market and leave retailers high and dry. That never works. That just leaves more people who are P.O.'d at us than happy with us."

There are also still no games that are definitely launch titles. But Moore does outline the strategy Microsoft is approaching. "So much is going to happen in the next couple of months. My view is simple: You need to make sure that you have the key genres covered at launch. Take care of sports, racing, action adventure, fantasy, first-person shooters. I think there are check marks that need to go in boxes to make sure that gamers have games they are looking for in a particular genre. We're still tracking 24 to 40 Xbox 360 games for release before the end of the calendar year. I think you'll see that all the titles we got excited about at E3 are still firmly in that launch window [90 days from the release of the Xbox 360]."

But what about gamers who aren't ready to jump into the next generation? Moore seems pleased with the current success of the original Xbox and doesn't see any price drop with the console. "We're selling all we can get [made]. Our biggest challenge is to meet demand in what is typically a very quiet time of year. So, no, I don't see any plans to change any pricing as we currently stand on the Xbox."

Gonna start saving for $399US version!
May not buy right at launch only because it seems the launch titles will be under-whelming. I'm still hoping for PVR capabilities too!

yea that 299 version is not worth it, for an exta hunred you get so much more, the hard drive alone makes the difference... i think the guy was right in saying noone would buy the 299 model, cept a few people who play xbox a couple times a month... i cant afford 399 tho... guess i'll stick to my original and wait

399 one for sure.

Dawtcalm, the actual system doesn't have pvr but it will connect directly to a pc with windows media centre edition and play whatever shows you have recorded or music.

I believe the 399 version comes with a bonus remote, so thats pretty cool.

I was thinking of getting the deluxe version of it around launch but I dunno if I can afford it and goto school :D I think I might just wait it out a awhile until they start making a bundle with just wireless controller and hdd. I don't need the remote or headset as I already have a media xbox and with my poor internet I can't use live. I wish they would release three different versions.

I don't know if I'm going to get it right away or even at all. Might stick with just PC this time around. They seem to be releasing all the games on PC as well, anyways.. and I just blew a whack load of money on a new PC. I'll most likely get it eventually, though. And it'll be the 399 version. Likely early 2006.

If my friend never bought me an xbox i wouldnt be into console gaming at all.

But now he got me hooked. Missing out on halo 3, ninja gaiden 2, DOA4 and gears of war and so on is just not an option now. If i never had an xbox i would be striclty a pc gamer.

The games you guys listed make me want Xbox 360 again, lol... Well, I always wanted it, but you know.

Oh, and Buka12, Elder Scrolls does look amazing, but it's coming out for PC as well. I will most likely get it for PC rather than 360.

i watched the battlefeild 2 gameplay dmeo for the 360 and it looked awesome.

Also not for the 360 but mortal kombat shaolin monks looks good too , there was a shot playable demo and it was pretty fun and looked nice graphically.

To all the people saying they're going to get this at launch, wouldn't you want to wait for the later versions that should come with HD-DVD drives instead of regular DVD drives? I'd also just wait a few months after launch until the PS3 hits to see if that effects pricing, especially if the PS3 does well at launch.

No, next question. Maybe ill wait a few months but not for the ps3 , i dont care for it at all, and price isnt as big an issue i thought it would be.

HD-DVD makes no difference to me, regular dvd's are fine for the time being. The ps3 will be one expensive B***H as stated by the creator. Plus, I personally dislike sony and their products so its out of the question.

The 360 linuep is just too damn good right now, its gonna be a wallet emptying goliath come christmas.

It still doesn't make sense to release a console that's focused on the HD era which doesn't support an HD format be it either Blue-Ray or HD-DVD.

Personally I think the price is just to high to pay right off the bat. Considering that most games won't take real advantage of the hardware until second gen titles hit, I don't see any real logic paying a premium to have a console that early on. But I don't have endless amounts of cash, and I also think as I get older I just don't play games that often to justify spending the cash. Heck, maybe the 360 will go the way of the Dreamcast and I can pickone up a few years later for $60.

I'm not trying to turn this into a PS3 vs 360 thing. I wouldn't get a PS3 at launch either. I just don't think there's enough of an advantage to buying a system right away to justify the price premium you'll pay compared to waiting a year.

Any way, what if the PS3 can pull off those a Kill Zone type game experience? I think I'd be more then willing to wait 4 months to see what the PS3 can do before spending any cash.

Also, the console market can have strange results. I wouldn't be shocked if MS or Sony ended up like Sega. I mean how many times was one system suppsoe to be the "winner" only to fail.

The "core" system is mearly a way to say MS has a system on the market for 299. The 399 "premium" package is really the real xbox360. About the ps3, even if it can pull off that killzone movie's effects, I still won't buy it. Sony is a BS company who lies to us the consumers, and remember its just my opinion.

Gates has a massive money bag enough to gaurantee the 360 a place at the top, nothing like the way the dreamcast went.

I really haven't seen anything next gen games that have blown me away. Yes graphcis are better but that's to be expected, I mean they all seem to be falling in line with what would be expected, if not a bit underwhelming. To be honest I was really impressed by the Killzone 2 trailer not because of the graphics (which I'm not wanting to start a debate over if real or not, I think most people are aware that was all prerendered to "spec"). Any ways, what really got me attention was the idea of creating a game experience like that. That's were I'd like to see more developers go with games, is trying to enhance the experience.

I mean what games are people really excited about on the next gen systems? I mean nothing so far has made me think I have to shell out $600 for a next gen machine anytime soon. There's Perfect Dark Zero, okay, an "update" to a title that I played 5 years ago and from what I've read might not be the killer app some are expecting. PGR3, I love racing games and have been a fan of this series sicne the original MSR on the Dreamcast but I haven't seen anything regarding gameplay that seems innovative, or sorry I can watch other people race on Live, interesting but not $600 interesting. What else, Full Auto, okay it's Burnout with guns. Agian, not saying it won't be fun but is it $600 worth of fun?

Who knows, maybe once I see a 360 in action and get my hands on one of the gmaes I'll be sold and start saving. Until then it'll be interesting to watch the battle between MS and Sony, and how Sony will handle all this, especially if the rumours of the PS3's high price will be true, and what Nintendo is doing under the radar.

I guess that's my point with all the next gen systems, is that there doesn't seem to be anything that's causing me to wnat to shell out $600. Honestly, the 360's Media Centre funtionality has more of my interest right now then the gaming.

sucks for you then jb22.

but others here have said numerous times what games look good to them. I saw a demo of battlefeild 2 gameplay for the 360 and it looked damned good. Totally different from what im used to in terms of FPS games or just WW2 FPS games.

Also from what i have seen of gears of war , nothing has been like this game before either.

havnt seen enough of pefect dark zero but it looks good still and not every game has to be totally different than anythign before it. Thats why i look forward to PGR3, i want more of what i experienced in PGR 1 and 2 but with more polish.

same with DOA4 i want mroe of the same but with some nice polish to it.

so while youre sitting aroudn waiting for the second comming of christ....ill be playing some kick ass games and having a great multiplayer experience as well.

off topic

Damn Chew youre at like level 27 in halo 2. I havnt been playign nearly enough to compete with that though.
