View Full Version : Thermal paste. {more is not better}

I thought I would post this picture that clearly shows why to much
paste can have the opposite effect to what it is made for.
Is more better?
No would be the answer.
but more to the point is why, you see in the picture a large amount
of paste that is not on the chip but around it.
you will also note that there is almost no paste in the center (core)
of the chip.
The person who put the past on put it in the correct place but used
way to much. When the heat-sink was pushed down on the cpu the
paste was pushed out to the sides. this causes a suction in the
center pulling the paste away from the center were its needed.
there is enough paste to do up to 4 cpu's on one and the effect
was a fried cpu.
ps...
mods if this belongs somewhere els feel free to move it:)
Ya you only need very little - whoever did that wasn't aware that socket 7 processors do not need paste. They run very cool without.

ditto, no need to put a lot. but from time to time, I suggest to re-add thermal!

Whao! Looks like someone emptied the tube!

I guess they thought one tube is one application :ggl:

Wonder what they do with a tube of tooth paste?????
looks like cheap compound, infact it's not all that bad either, arctic silver starts to conduct electricity under pressure and heat, plus in a factory (where that stuff is used most) why would you need employees to spend lots of time making sure the paste is spread out evenly? time is money and that stuff's not worth a second:P
i have seen heatsinks with thermal paper type stuff
that stuff is not as good as paste, why use it?
and if u do not use anything, paper or paste what is the problem, how much would it overheat?

A newbie didn't know how to use the paste properly :P...lol
Wow, thats a lot of paste.

I wouldn't use thermal paper but it is used in manufacturing for
convenience.
in most cases using nothing at all would burn the chip.
lol glitch it wasn't me.

My P133 oc to 166 runs fine by placing a very thin layer of thermal paste and puting the heatsink on. I could run it without the paste. That is definitely way too much paste!
well i do fell sorry for the person
u just know they are a noob and they do have no common sense
the person was prob happy they built a computer and then ****ed up on such a simple thing :(

Some useful links on thermal paste application, and tossed one in on heat-sink lapping just for fun.

Where did you get that from?
Thermal interface material improves heat transfer a little bit - generally processors run anywhere from 10C to 2C cooler when it's applied. It's only used to fill the tiny "valleys" which inevitably exist in metal. Systems which overheat with no pad or paste don't have sufficient cooling to begin with.
wow wonder if that processor will still work. lol i put it on with paper. but like less than a pea size then spread evenly with a small piece of paper

I got that from the side of caution AMD:)

I have always used Artic Silver 5 and never a problem as the old saying goes
A Little Goes a Long Way
I have had some people bring their computers to me to do cleaning or a upgrade mobo and such on them and never have I seen one that bad as the two in the pics above
