I bought a PS2 for christmas..
My sone plays games on it, I put a dvd in the drive to watch a movie and it worked no problem..
Now I put another movie in and it keeps asking for Playstation or Playstation 2 format disk..
Wht all of the sudden it does not want to play movies now..
Did I do something wrong??
ANyway, Something similar happened with our standalone DVD player the other night. My sister was watching some show of hers on dvd for a few hours and it worked fine, later that night i put in a dvd we rented from blockbuster. The DVD started to make the player make some strange noises and then it said some kind of error after a minute.
We tried another dvd, same thing happened. Then we put back the dvd my sister was successfully watching before we put in the rogers disc and the same thing occured.
Anyway I got my lens cleaning cd and put it in and cleaned it , and the player worked fine again after that with all other discs jus tno the one offending disc.
So Im saying maybe the disk you tried dirtied the lens somehow and and you may just need to use a lens cleaner to clean it.......
try that out if you havnt already.
Did you try the lens cleaner? did it help out at all?

Maybe it depends on the kind of cd or dvd the movie is on?

Modding is not needed. I've noticed that my PS2Slim likes DVD-R from TY. It has trouble with DVD+R stuff...but than again, my DVD burner at the time didn't have booktype settings for DVD+R media. I'm sure burners these days make DVD+R media more compatible.
