View Full Version : Bridging wifi to wired networks question
I've recently bought a dlink usb wifi antenna and i have a dlink router i'd like to bridge the 2 connections together but i'm running into a few problems, the secondary connection (wifi) is taking over my built in network card, is there a way I can get windows to use my computer as a dhcp server or to forward the connection to my router? I'm trying to connect my upstairs and downstairs networks=\
Get a wireless router (instead of wired) and be done with in - it will be one network and you won't have to worry about bridging. Yes, all of them can take conventional Ethernet and wireless.
Anything which relies on a computer being on continuously (besides a client server network or printer sharing) isn't worth your time.
Not enough info - need better description of the network.
Description -
downstairs
dlink di-624 - 2 xp, 1 win2k, 1 osx86
upstairs
dlink di-604 - 2xp, 1 win2k, 1 fedora
as you can see i'm running short on cash here since all the machines are decent. i need to bridge the two networks and have bought a ****ty dlink usb wifi adaptor, i've bridged connections in linux before using brctl and making my ip's 10.x.x.x with no problems i thought windows would be able to do the same thing but without linux drivers for this wifi thing i can't try.
both of my routers are on 10.x.x.x class a, what is happening though is since the routers aren't very good at static addresses or class a networks and prefer c internally. anyway what's happening is windows can't seem to pick what connection takes priority over the other when both my wired network and the wifi card are on networks. and i'm not shelling out 50$ x3 for the other computers to be on the network downstairs and i'm not dragging 3 90foot cat5's through my house, my question is (and i've googled.... alot) how do i get all machines together without spending money, in linux you can use dhcpd and shut down the wired routers dhcp and pretty much become a switch so the linux box can then bridge 2 seperate routers, but there arent linux drivers out, and windows 2k and xp are both horrid at doing anything but playing games on (ehe).
If I'm reading your networks right, here's what I'm getting:
Unless the dlink usb wifi antenna has the ability to switch over to AP mode (you'll know if it's in the software), you'll need a wireless access point to bridge the two wired networks.
