How do I go about making wmp as my default player?

Open WMP -> goto Tools -> Options... -> File Types -> check the boxes of the file types you wish to open with WMP.

Another method if using XP

In order to set it as system default, go the "add/remove programs" "set program access and defaults" select "custom" and check off WMP as default media player.
