anyone running Vista find problems with 8.1?

Loaded it up on a laptop with Premium and every sign-in results in a MSN failure to operate and shuts down.

Running v. 8.0 instead with no problems.

Running Windows Vista Basic on the laptop.

Data Execution Protection keeps shutting Messenger Live (latest version) down. It is not showing in the program in the DEP list.

Just turn off DEP, it's more of an annoyance than a security feature.

Disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

No reason to turn it off completely. Just set it for "essential windows programs and services only."

Hit Windows Key + Pause (on your keyboard)
Go to "Advanced System Settings"
Click the "Advanced Tab"
Under "Performance" click "Settings"
Go to the Data Execution Prevention Tab and click "Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only".\

That should take care of it..

Except I eventually found that I had to add quite a number of exceptions and even then it made some programs not load. I eventually had to disable DEP.

You shouldn't need exceptions for that one. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the "Turn on DEP except for programs and services I select" option. You can't even add things to any list if you have it set to "essential...only".

Setting as essential gave me problems in the first place so I had to set it to make exceptions.

Ah. I'm not sure then as I haven't ever had any problems with DEP and the "essential services".
