Arrrghh...
I just got a letter from Rogers wireless to tell me that after May 1 my cell phone will no longer work and unless I get a new one from them, they will just discontinue my service.
Apparently, they are no longer going to support the type of service that my phone uses. I got it 6 yrs ago and it switches between analog and digital. I really liked it because still there are some places without digital service. My cottage for one... and since my phone is still able to use analog I have service there.
Now they are forcing me to get a new phone and I won't be able to have cell service at the cottage!! I'm really angry about this and I won't be getting a new phone from them or continuing my service with them!! What happens to all these cell phones that are not going to work now?? They all go to the landfill?
Rogers also switched up some of the tv programming.. offered less tv for more money, then they stopped allowing you to get radio stations without paying extra...
We have already switched to Bell ExpressVu, now I will switch my cell phone service too...

You're going to have to find out who has cell coverage in the area of your cottage and go with them.
They are supposed to have all the towers set up and running with the new equipment before discontinuing their old analog service... so maybe one of their new phones may give you coverage up there and you don't even know it.
There really isn't too many people left with those older phones... only a handful like yourself that still have one.

I know this might be a issue, but it's not only rogers, pretty much all of the GSM carriers in the US are also doing the same this yr in turning off TDMA. Know that Rogers has not been selling Analog phones for many yrs now. Like anything they have overlapped the service for users who have no done Hardware Upgrades. As for the signal being week, contact Rogers. Tell them about your issues, and they will look into it. They have a engineering dept for those issues.
Pretzel you probably qualify for a free hardware upgrade as well, all they require is u renew your contract

Maybe it's our phone then, it does work but not 100% and many times calls will get cut.
They need to update those areas so that all phones work it's not like they're not making a fortune.

Why should I be forced to renew another contract? I have already fulfilled my original contract. I should just be able to get another phone and not have to go on a another contract.
If they are going to make me go on another contract, I will just switch carriers. I know I will also have to go on a contract with a new carrier, but it's the principal of the thing. I shouldn't be forced into that after I have already fullfilled my contract with them.

You should be able to get a new phone and keep your existing contract but you would have to pay for the phone yourself. They also offer cheap or for free phones but then you would have to commit for 1,2 or 3 years service.
Fido+Rogers= Rogers
When I go up to my cottage in Thornbury, my friends Bell does not work there. Telus is a hit and run sort of, it will be working for a day or so and then nothing for some days. Thats why me and my family use Rogers/Fido for our cellphone.
Now, all you need to do is to get a quad-band phone. Dont get the cheap $0 because they are not good when it comes to RF signal.

I'm with Bell and I needed a new phone last fall so I went and got one from Bell, they did want a new contract but instead I elected to buy the phone at a cost of $270.00 and remained with the old contract I had since I wanted no changes to my service.
This way should I want to change to another provider no charges are owed.
Still it goes month to month just as before.
