I figured out how to boot from a card-reader + a 4gb SD card. So now I just wanted to mess around with something that I can put on the SD and boot from that and see how it goes. Suggestions?

In theory. yes. DSL (Damn Small Linux) is only 50MB. OpenSuse 10.2 and Fedora easily fit on a DVD. Knoppix Live CD fits on a ... well a 700MB CD.

As you can see, size is not the issue. I am not really sure about support for card interfaces out of the box (as it were). I've only barely skimmed such messages on the Linux forums I watch as I don't use the feature. You may need to install support for SD cards after the fact.
